1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Hello Woodson Families,

Here we are at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.  I never would have imagined this turn of events when we opened school back in August. I want to thank our community for their continued support through this year’s rollercoaster.

Next year continues to be uncertain and we will work to do our best with whatever next year looks like. Please look for communications throughout the summer to detail our plans for fall.

To our Seniors - we wish you much peace, health and success in the future.  Seeing many of you in real life this week has re-energized us going into the summer.

If you did not take your graduation photo on Thursday or Friday, we encourage you to do so on the overflow date of Wednesday, June 17th. We have an additional 240 slots available. The SignUpGenius for the Wednesday, June 17th photo op will be sent to Senior families through eNotify tonight. If this date does not work for your family, please email Ms. Martin at kamartin@fcps.edu so that we can coordinate an alternative arrangement.

Thank you for your patience with the senior photo op. This event has taken many different forms over the last month or so. Please be assured that we have followed FCPS guidance every step of the way. The final product, I believe, was the most celebratory event possible that was as close to a graduation as permitted by FCPS and within the Health Department guidelines.

As we have moved through the various stages of closure and re-opening, navigating the guidelines provided to us required multiple changes of plans and I am thankful to those who understood these challenges and supported us along the way. The changes we faced throughout the last few months were at times monumental and I applaud our community for working with our staff to implement the distance learning plan as well as graduation activities.

Today marks the end of another year of Woodson Weekly emails. We will take a few weeks off and be back at some point in July with updates to next year’s schedule. If you are interested in summer learning opportunities provided by FCPS (many are free!), please be sure to read the information below.

I hope everyone is able to disconnect from digital devices at some point this summer; may you all enjoy a relaxing, safe and healthy summer break!

Sincerely,
Dr. Floyd

2. Summer Learning Opportunities

Continuity of Learning

FCPS school buildings will remain closed through the end of July. Therefore, we will continue to provide optional, virtual learning opportunities for students from June 29 to July 31. Students currently in grades 9-11 will have access to a Google Site that provides practice on essential skills to review over the summer. The Google Site(s) will be located on the Free Summer Offerings page and will be live by June 24. The Math site will focus on practice of essential math content. The English site will provide practice on grammar and mechanics and offer choice reading opportunities.

A supplemental English Language Development Summer Practice Book will be mailed to students enrolled in High School ESOL Newcomer Programming (ELP Level 1 & 2) in Grades 9 - 11. These books will provide English Language Development practice activities to support and enrich language development during the summer. High school English Learners enrolled in Individual Math and Algebra 1 Part 1 in the spring of 2020 will mailed an Algebra preparation focused math packet.

Students with disabilities accessing the Adapted Curriculum will receive four packets mailed to families in July to support their learning.

To support student learning from June 29 to July 31, teachers will hold one hour per week of “office hours” for Continuity of Learning. Office hours for Math, English, and English Language Development will be with one of our own outstanding staff members and are intended to support students with the digital practice resources and the English Language Development Summer Practice Book. Attendance is optional. More information on when office hours will be held will be coming soon.

FCPS Online Campus

Students seeking new course credit (i.e. taking a new class for the first time) this summer can do so through the FCPS Online Campus. Information on the enrollment process, registration fees, technology requirements and pre-requisites, and course offerings available can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning/online-programs. Please contract you child’s school counselor for questions related to the FCPS Online Campus.

4. Yearbook Distribution!

Great news, Woodson! We have a distribution date for the yearbook!

It’s not as early as we’d like, but it’s not as late as some schools have to accept! As many of you know, the printing plant in Kansas was closed for six weeks due to COVID 19. The plant is up and running again but at reduced capacity in accordance with local health department rules.

So mark your calendars: Yearbook distribution is Thursday, July 23, rain or shine!

Details of how the distribution will work will be forthcoming as soon as possible. We will follow all requirements set forth by the health department and FCPS for a safe distribution.

If you are moving from the area before July 23, please contact Beth Koby, yearbook adviser, to discuss how we can get your book to you. ewkoby@fcps.edu

There are only150 books remaining for sale! The price is now $90. Act now before they’re gone!

7. This is My Brave Auditions

Auditions for This is My Brave have been extended through the end of August.  Fairfax County is seeking storytellers who are high school students with a 5-minute story to share about Teen Mental Health via poetry, original music, comedy, essay or other artistic expression.  Storytelling saves lives.

For more information, email erin.gallagher@thisismybrave.org or visit

https://thisismybrave.org/auditions/.

8. 30 Minute Consultation with a FCPS Clinician

Any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student.

This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s emotional well-being during their time away from school. Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time.  Information about community resources will also be made available. Parents can schedule a phone consultation online

This service is not intended for mental health emergencies.  If an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911.  Additionally, students and families can access mental health support online if there is a crisis of emergency during the time of the closure.

9. New NOVA JumpStart Opportunity

NOVA announced the launch of JumpStart, a new opportunity for current and rising seniors to take up to two, tuition-free online college courses this summer. NOVA has identified a specific set of courses available through this initiative, including courses for NOVA degree requirements that are also highly transferable credits to four-year institutions as well as coursework in cloud computing through a collaboration with Amazon Web Services.

FCPS is excited to partner with NOVA on this opportunity and will share more information for students and families as additional details about qualifications and registration emerge.

10. FAQs About Refunds and Fees

Question:  What is the status of refunds for fees paid for various activities that are not going to happen due to the pandemic?

Answer:

  • Teachers, sponsors, and supervising administrators have been working with vendors and travel companies.
  • Refunds for field trips are issued only if the vendor/travel company is providing refunds. Refunds are prorated based on the amount given by the vendor/travel company.
  • Travel companies and vendors may just issue a credit to the student’s name on the reservation for a postponed field trip.
  • We will issue a refund for a field trip once the vendor or travel company returns the money to Woodson High School.  This is based on the amount / percentage refunded.
  • Class fees will be refunded at the end of the year as usual based on what is not used on consumables in the class.
  • These will typically be issued through the credit card on file in MySchoolBucks.

Question:  Can students get a refund on his parking fee?

Answer:  Yes.  If you paid the full amount you will receive $50 (1/4 of the year).  A check will be sent to your house from FCPS.  They are currently working on this process, and it will take some time.  The school does not have any control over this process.

Have a great summer!
