Cub Run Virtual Spirit Week

Dear Cub Run Families:

This year’s end looks and feels different but the message we have for our students, families, and staff never changes even when the world around us does.

Students, thank you for learning with us, thank you for growing with us, thank you for being part of the Cub Run family. We love you!

Parents, thank you for holding on during this time and your adaptability to change as we navigated new waters with Distance Learning. Thank you also for trusting us with your child’s education and your unwavering support.

The 6th grade class, you have handled your final year at Cub Run with grace, resilience, and acceptance. Remember, that you always have a home and our doors are always open and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of you.

Teachers and staff, thank you for working tirelessly to bring our students exceptional virtual instruction, resources, and working with a new normal. Your dedication and commitment to your students has been extraordinary and has been the pillar of our success as a school.

Through all of this we have been reminded many times over how special our Cub Run family is and what we should never take for granted. We have missed everyone dearly and cannot wait until we are back together as a school community.

All the best-

Jenni Coakley, Principal

Shelia Sobeski, Assistant Principal

iReady Instruction Available June and July

iReady instruction is available for use by K-6 elementary school students during June and July of 2020 at no additional cost.  This is being turned on to provide optional individual practice to students.  Students may access iReady instruction as soon as it is practical for schools, teachers, and students.  Lessons will be curated based on the student’s most recent test score in reading or mathematics during the fall or winter test windows.

If a student has not completed an assessment, lessons have been curated with current grade level content and foundational skills. Reading and math instruction is available to students in grades K-6. Access to iReady will be turned off August 1, 2020.

Students will access iReady instruction through the FCPS public Universal Screener website, where they will enter their FCPS login credentials.  Though teachers are not required to use iReady lessons, teachers are expected to demonstrate to students how to access the resource.  A short presentation on how to support this task is available (to download a copy) at FCPS-iReady Onboard Lesson Presentation.

Fairfax County Public Libraries Virtual Summer Reading

  • This year’s program will be all virtual;
  • The program will run from June 12-August 14. Our theme will be “Imagine Your Story;”
  • All participants will need to sign up online using our Summer Reading App before they download their gameboard. Staff are available via phone or online chat to answer their questions about signing up if they have trouble;
  • This summer, readers of all ages will have the opportunity to play a gameboard where they can complete a series of challenges, read books of their choice, or a mix of both depending on their interests and preferences. Youth game boards will be available in English and Spanish. These will go live on June 12;
  • All game board PDFs are clickable and every challenge piece will link back to a page on our website with additional details, resources, and related enrichment activities for participants who want to go the extra mile;
  • As participants play the game and hit their milestones, they will be entered into prize drawings for one of two Amazon gift cards in each age category (preschool, school-age, teen, and adult). The 1st milestone prize is $50, the 2nd is $100, and the 3rd is $150. They will submit their information to us via a Survey Monkey form for each milestone. Links to the surveys are embedded into each milestone piece in the game and also available on our website;
  • Readers who sign up on the first day of the program (June 12) will be entered into a drawing for a $25 e-gift card from Scrawl Books;
  • Participants who complete all three challenges by August 14 will be entered into a grand-prize drawing for Washington Nationals ticket prize pack for them and their family to enjoy once games resume;
  • Since we weren’t able to make it into your classrooms this year for booktalks, we have a Summer Reading Adventure 2020 playlist on YouTube that features promo videos with basic information about the program (in English and Spanish) as well as short booktalks for preschoolers, school-age kids, and teens. We will be adding additional booktalks on Instagram throughout the summer;
  • Please let your families know that social media is a great place to find us these days. We’re @FairfaxLibrary on Instagram and Twitter and Fairfax County Library on Facebook;
  • The Teen Cover Art Contest, Teen Film Festival, and For Love of Country Essay and Poetry contest will accept only digital submissions this summer and will run concurrently with the Summer Reading Adventure. Any awards ceremonies associated with these contests are TBD;
  • Our virtual programs will continue all summer long and information about those can be found on our events calendar;
  • Additional information can be found here.
