Hunters Woods ES - End of Year | June 11, 2020

final

Dear Hunters Woods Families,

We’d like to take a moment to thank all of you for your continued partnership during the 2019-2020 school year. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences, and recall our overarching themes of Dream Big and Be Kind, we continue to value the creativity, collaboration and flexibility demonstrated by our students, parents, and staff members this year.

This school year has presented us with many transitions as we have moved from physical classrooms to virtual ones. Together we learned, grew and stayed connected; creating special memories along the way. It’s hard to believe that it’s already June. We now find ourselves struggling, as we do every year, to say our farewells. We are so proud of the determination and hard work that the amazing students and staff of HWES have shown, in their classrooms on Colts Neck Road, and in their virtual classrooms on “BBCU Boulevard”. We celebrate their achievements, and we will certainly miss seeing them every day.

This edition is full of information that we hope is helpful to you and your family; some of the highlights include:

  • Staff Farewells
  • Information About Summer Learning Resources
  • Reading Under The Stars- HWES Summer Reading Nights
  • Upcoming Parent Coffee with our Counseling Team
  • FCPS and County Resources

At the end of the last day of school each year, we traditionally make an announcement over our PA system to all of our students, encouraging them to find a few good books to read over the summer.  Please pass this message along to your children, we can't wait to hear about what they have read.

If there is anything that we can do to support you or your family over the summer break, please do not hesitate to reach out, we are here for you.

With kindness, appreciation and respect,

Emily Cope, Sean McCartney and Ipsa Stringer

Summer Learning Opportunities

Dear Parents/Guardians,

FCPS is offering several optional distance learning opportunities this summer for students to review and practice essential skills from the current grade.

  • Students will have access to skill practice using iReady digital lessons through the FCPS public Universal Screener website. Students enter their FCPS login credentials to access these resources. These digital activities will be available until Friday, July 31st.
  • Students currently in grades K-6 will receive both a Mathematics and a Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail by the end of June. Digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page. These books will provide practice activities to review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year and do not preview content from next year's grade level.
  • A teacher will be available on a Blackboard Collaborate link, one hour each week between June 29 to July 31 to answer student questions about the summer workbook.
  • To register your child for the one hour per week question session/office hour and receive a secure link, please complete The Summer Continuity of Learning Form by Friday, June 19.  Only students registered on this form will receive log-in information via their fcpsschools.net address prior to the first session.

Keep up with the food distribution sites using our FCPS Food Resources page. As the coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency continues to evolve, we understand that individuals and families in our communities may have food assistance needs.

Fairfax County Government developed a searchable map that includes community food distribution sites, including FCPS grab and go locations, community meal distribution sites, food pantries, and other related services.  View the map here.
