Wednesday, June 10
As we wind down this very unusual school year, I want to take a moment to thank everyone for all of their support throughout the year and especially as we had to close schools and move into distance learning. As a staff, we have truly missed your children and it seems very strange to end the year without those traditional activities that signal the end of a school year. So many of our staff have been creative in winding down the year with your children and we will give our 6th grade students a special sendoff on Thursday. If you are on the parade route and see our students, (Union Village Circle or Springstone Drive), please cheer for them!

We held our virtual kindergarten orientation on Monday evening. If you missed the event and want to watch the recorded version, here is the link: UMES Kindergarten Orientation - recording_1
Governor Northam shared guidelines school systems must follow in reopening schools in the summer/fall. Dr. Brabrand is scheduled to present what that might look like in FCPS to the School Board on Monday, June 15. I will continue to be in touch over the summer and let you know our plans for back to school activities.
The county will be sending summer workbooks out to all students by June 29. Workbooks will include math and language arts activities that will focus on the essential skills and concepts that children should know for their current grade level. More detailed information about summer learning is below.
If you have borrowed a computer from the school and are remaining in our boundary, you may keep the device over the summer. If you are leaving the area, please contact Kyle Irvine (keirvine@fcps.edu) to arrange for a drop off time.
Remember, tomorrow is the last day of lessons for the 2019-2020 school year!
Take good care,
Kathy
Virtual 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony, Thursday, June 11
We will hold a virtual promotion ceremony for our 6th graders on Thursday, June 11 during the normal Language Arts time using students' Blackboard Collaborate link. We will post the video of the session on our website later that day. Parents of 6th grade students with questions should reach out to their child's homeroom teacher. Sixth grade students will continue to be celebrated by driving through the bus loop at 2:00 that day to pick up their awards and wave to their teachers. All cars should turn on Union Village Circle off of Union Mill Road and follow the signs to the school.
Summer Learning
FCPS school buildings will remain closed through at least the end of July so the county will continue to provide recommended distance learning opportunities for students throughout the summer. Your children will have access to skill practice through iReady digital lessons through the FCPS public Universal Screener website. Students will need to enter their FCPS login credentials to access these resources. These digital activities will be available until Friday, July 31.
Additionally, students currently in grades K-6 will receive both a Mathematics and a Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail by the end of June. Digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page. These books will provide recommended practice activities for children to review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year; they are not intended to preview content for the next year’s grade level but rather reinforce essential learning from this past year. Second language students that are currently ELP Levels 1 and 2 will also receive a supplemental workbook to support language acquisition.
Children can access these activities from June 29 to July 31 and they will have the opportunity to attend one virtual office hour each week with one of our own outstanding staff members. To register your child for office hours and receive a secure link, please complete the Google Form linked here. Once registered, your child will receive log-in information via their FCPS Google email address prior to the first session.

Strings Students Earn Gold Medals
Congratulations to 27 of our Strings students for earning Gold Medals for their CVHS Pyramid Solo Spotlight performances! Instead of our planned in-person event, these students quickly adapted to preparing at home and through online meetings and each submitted a video performance of a prepared solo. Each student received feedback from one of our CVHS Pyramid elementary Strings teachers. Impressively, all 27 students earned the highest rating of Gold! Congratulations to the following musicians: Mason A. , Valerie A. , Amanda A., Claire A., Sydney A., Katie B., Finn B., Tyler B., Lillian D., Mikayla D., Matilda E., Lilla H., Jason H., Olivia H., Amanda J., Sriya K., Juliette L., Carsen M., Chase M., Xavier M., Ella M., Matthew M., Vivienne R., Noelle S., Carmen S., Max T., and Caroline W.
