Daniels Run Down-Family Edition, June 12, 2020

6th Grade

Congratulations to our 6th grade students!

Principal's Corner

Greetings Families,

This has certainly been a school year we will not forget.  On behalf of Mrs. Hein and Mr. Parker, I want to say thank you to our students, families and staff for overcoming the many challenges of distance learning and making the best of a difficult situation.  It was great seeing many of our Kindergarten and Sixth grade students and families this week during our "drive/walk thru" promotion events.  Many families are ending their elementary experience as their oldest or only child heads to middle school.  Thank you for all the time and effort you have dedicated to Daniels Run!

I know there are many questions regarding the start of the 2020-21 school year.  Governor Ralph Northam made an announcement Tuesday regarding the phased approach to reopening schools. Below are several links related to that announcement:

I encourage you to watch the FCPS School Board meeting on June 15th as further details are discussed regarding the opening of the 2020-21 school year.

I included a message to students in yesterday's announcements, here it is again in case you missed it.

Summer Reading Challenge!

We are excited to announce that Summer Reading begins on June 15 and will run through August 24!

The goal is simple: read every day. You can read anything, from magazines to books to cereal boxes! You can also use resources like MYON, TumbleBooks, and Scholastic. Exercising those reading muscles through the summer months will help kids stay ready for school in the fall! Reading for at least 20 minutes every day is a great habit to start!

We have included a fun twist on summer reading with various challenges and fun ways to incorporate reading into every day life. We hope you enjoy it!

Student Registration

Schools remain closed to families; however, if you have a rising kindergartener or other new student to register, we would like to do a preliminary registration now.  If you know of any families that would be new to Daniels Run (that have rising kindergarteners or students in grades 1-6), please forward this information to them.  Early registration for next year is important as it supports the number of teachers for which we are staffed.

To register your child for school, please email anunez@fcps.edu with “Registration” in the subject line.  If you are able to fill out the form using this link https://danielsrunes.fcps.edu/new-student-registration-2020-21 save it to your device, and attach it to the email to send back to us, that is the preferred option.  If you are not able to do that, please let us know when you might be available for a phone interview.  After we receive your email, we will reach out with any additional questions. If you have any questions or concerns about registration, please email Mrs. Nunez.

Tutoring Services

Please note the following is being shared for Casey Nelson as information and is not meant as an endorsement by Daniels Run or FCPS.

I wanted to share an opportunity for students and parents to participate in if there is interest. My name is Casey Nelson, Project Leader for the K-12 tutoring program for the Covid Student Service Corps (CSSC) chapter at George Mason University. Our tutoring program is built to connect students from Fairfax County Public Schools to a George Mason University student-volunteer as their tutor. The tutoring sessions take place virtually and at the agreed availability of the student and tutor.

If this sounds like a service that would benefit your child, you can visit our website (csscgmu.com) then click on the “Projects” tab which will take you to the K-12 Tutoring page to fill out a form to sign your child up. You can also contact me via email (caseycsscgmu@gmail.com) and I can send you the sign up information if it is more convenient for you. After you sign your child up, you will receive a confirmation email stating your form was received. I will match your child to one of our tutors that fits with their availability and subject. Then you will receive another email from me with the tutor’s contact information a few days later. From there the tutor will set up virtual meetings through Zoom, Webex, or Google Hangouts, whichever is most convenient.

We understand it is a challenging time and we want to be there to help your child succeed in the coming school year. Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions! Thanks!
