Terra Centre Updates 6-8-20

Terra Centre Families,

Student Item Distribution & Collection is this week! Our teachers and staff are looking forward to the opportunity to say goodbye and wish you a great summer! A detailed communication was sent out separately and the schedule is also included below. For the safety of the staff, please remember to stay in your car. If you have a mask, we ask that you wear one. They are not required, but they are preferred.

New kindergarten and grade 1-6 student registrations are being accepted! Registration numbers directly impact our staffing. Registering now is essential as this helps to keep class sizes at optimal numbers for the best learning environment for all students. Please encourage new families or families with rising kindergarteners to visit the Terra Centre Website, or to contact Dee Cunningham via cmcunningham@fcps.edu or 703-249-1401. Registrations are done via email. See below for additional details and links.

Save Time, Money, and Stay Safe! Our PTA is taking orders for School Supply Kits for the 2020-2021 school year. Orders are due by July 7th. Scroll down to see detailed information. Please note that supply kits are delivered directly to school. Arrangements will be made to distribute kits to families should there be an extended distance learning schedule in the fall.

As we prepare for the 2020-2021 school year, we have an optional form available for parents.  The purpose of the form is to provide additional information about their child that the current teacher may not be aware of, such as their child’s strengths and needs as a learner as well as information about the learning environment best suited for their child.  Please do not request a specific teacher, as those requests cannot be honored. This form can be accessed with the link above from May 15, 2020 – June 15, 2020.  If you would like to provide input, please submit this information no later than June 15, 2020.

FCPS Summer Continuity of Learning

Elementary School

Elementary school students will have the opportunity to focus on math and literacy skill-building using self-directed print and digital materials. Each school will have teachers who will support students in their summer learning experiences from June 29 - July 31. Students will have the opportunity to connect with these teachers virtually during office hours for support. These programs are free to students and more information about continuity of learning resources will be provided soon.

Special Education Services – Virtual Extended School Year

FCPS will provide Extended School Year (ESY) to students, grades PreK thru 12, whose IEP team determines that the student qualifies for ESY due to significant regression and lack of recovery of skills that were gained during the regular school year prior to the shutdown.  This summer, ESY services will be provided virtually to students June 29-July 24. The learning will be provided through the continued Distance Learning model. The learning materials will be available online and in printed packets mailed to students.

Virtual Preschool Autism Classrooms

Summer learning for preschool autism students will be done virtually from July 2-30. The learning information will be available online and in printed packets mailed to students. Staff will offer virtual parent coaching sessions.

School Year 2020-2021

Discussions are ongoing with the School Board about our Return to School plans for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.

FCPS is awaiting guidance from the state about the possible required conditions that will need to be met for schools to reopen.  FCPS also plans to seek the input of all stakeholder groups – parents, students, teachers, staff, and administrators – in developing the return to school plan.

The considerations for return to school include the need to:

  • Ensure safe learning and working environments for students and staff
  • Provide options for students and staff that are unable to return to school/work
  • Comply with any social distancing requirements
  • Provide student access to technology devices and internet services at home
  • Provide staff with adequate time and training to prepare for the new school year
  • Make decisions as soon as possible for scheduling and communication with families

FCPS is preparing for a variety of possible scenarios including:

  • Students will have a virtual start to the school year.
  • Students will return to school with social distancing in place.
  • School will open on time, but some students and/or staff may be unable to return and will participate through virtual learning.

In FCPS, our commitment to the health, well-being, and education of our students remains our highest priority.
