RRMS Summer Learning Opportunities

Summer Learning Opportunities

Is your student a good candidate for summer learning opportunities? Recently FCPS highlighted a variety of summer programs, you can see the message here and visit the Summer Learning Website here. Rocky Run would like to highlight a few that you may be interested in.

We hope that one of these summer options will be a good fit for your student and help them get ready for the 2020-21 school year.

Continuity of Learning - Summer Workbooks and Teacher Support

FCPS students of all grade levels will receive summer workbooks that focus on mathematics and literacy skills. Students can choose to use these workbooks to support their learning and students can sign up to attend office hours with current middle school teachers from June 29 to July 31.

While this is an open opportunity to all students at Rocky Run, we want the summer teachers to have a consistent and manageable load. We will be sending an invitation to a group of RRMS students to engage weekly for one hour in one of our summer courses. Math and English teachers, as well as counselors, will make contact with this group of students next week to encourage their attendance and participation.

More information and resources will be added to our school website and will be shared with students and families soon. Contact our resource teacher, Sandra Meador at SRMeador@fcps.edu regarding Continuity of Learning Program.

Algebra Credit Recovery

Students currently enrolled in Algebra 1 can also participate in one of two Algebra specific summer learning options.

Students who passed or failed Algebra 1 may take the Virtual Credit Recovery course to improve their understanding and skills before the next school year. Students who participate will meet daily with high school staff, review Algebra content, and receive a grade at the end of the summer.

Please note that the high school credit bearing course taken during the summer between the 8th and 9th grade may not be expunged.

Click here for more information about Credit Recovery and contact your child's counselor for the sign up information.

Summer Algebra Intervention (non-credit program)

In addition to the Credit Recovery for Algebra, teachers and schools can also recommend students for Summer Algebra Intervention. Like the Continuity of Learning option, Algebra Intervention will offer a self-directed, self-paced option for students who want to review Algebra. Students who are recommended for or sign up for Algebra Intervention will be able to connect with high school staff once a week for office hours. There is no credit or grade for this program. Please contact your child's counselor for sign up information.

Summer Online Program

FCPS Online Campus is offering various summer school courses and here is the Online Campus website for more information.

Online Campus course tuition has been reduced to $375 for this summer to:

  • Address the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the community.
  • Support student learning throughout the summer months.

If you have already registered for an Online Campus course for this summer, you will receive a refund for the difference in cost in approximately three to four weeks.

Other Summer Options

Students and parents may also receive information about specific programs such as ESY and ESOL Summer School. In addition, information about the VIP program which targets students in grades 6-8 will be shared.

Expunge High School Credits

The request to remove a HS credit bearing course from the transcript must be made in writing to the middle or high school that the student will attend the following year and prior to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year.

See Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.  If you have questions or concerns regarding this, please contact your child’s school counselor no later than June 12, 2020.  After this date, please contact your child’s high school counselor.
