Today, our teachers will continue to interact with our Herndon Middle School students in for the synchronous learning sessions. As we witness further incidents of racism and injustice towards African Americans, we are prepared to listen to our students and support them. I want to share the message I sent to our staff as they prepare for the remaining lessons for this year and conversations with our students.
HMS teachers, counselors and staff reviewed a message with resources prepared by our Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement, Instructional Services Department and Department of Student Services. FCPS students, families, and colleagues are now witnessing further evidence of historical and systemic racism, hate and oppression experienced by Black and African Americans nationwide. Recent examples are the disproportionality of COVID 19 on communities of color and the tragic death of George Floyd. Now more than ever, we heighten our recognition that this is not the time to be silent. In the words of Dr. Brabrand, “We must lean into each other and into the community we’ve built to create places and spaces where all are welcome and seen.”
Our teachers have resources and guidelines for talking with students and addressing their questions. I asked all staff to review The Dos and Don’ts of Discussing Acts of Racism and Hate with Students:
Do:
- Be mindful of the developmental level of your students
- Affirm identity and culture as welcome and integral to learning (routinely)
- Create safe opportunities for students to document or share their feelings
- Encourage students to share their feelings with a trusted adult
- Listen to your students and let them know there are people they can talk to if they need additional support (School Counselors, School Psychologists and School Social Workers)
- Empower students to change the future, by identifying past and present injustice and finding ways to build a better world

Don’t:
- Share images of graphic violence with students
- Share primary sources with slurs or caricatures with students, especially racial slurs or caricatures
- Assume particular students are traumatized or simulate trauma during instruction.
- Tolerate racism or harassment in school
- Require all students to participate in the conversation
Our teachers, counselors, administrators and all staff believe that together we create brave and safe spaces for listening and collaboration. We are learning and engaging with our Equity Leaders to be able to support students and ensure they feel heard and can process with a trusted adult at the school if needed. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our counselors or clinical staff if you have a specific request for your student.

Los maestros, consejeros y personal de HMS revisaron un mensaje con recursos preparados por nuestra Oficina de Aprendizaje Profesional y Participación Familiar, el Departamento de Servicios de Instrucción y el Departamento de Servicios Estudiantiles. Los estudiantes, las familias y los colegas de FCPS ahora están presenciando más evidencia de racismo, odio y opresión históricos y sistémicos que experiencia los negros y afroamericanos en todo el país. Ejemplos recientes son la desproporcionalidad de COVID 19 en comunidades de color y la trágica muerte de George Floyd. Ahora más que nunca, aumentamos nuestro reconocimiento de que este no es el momento de guardar silencio. En palabras del Dr. Brabrand, "Debemos apoyarnos el uno en el otro y en la comunidad que hemos construido para crear lugares y espacios donde todos sean bienvenidos y vistos".
Nuestros maestros tienen recursos y pautas para hablar con los estudiantes y abordar sus preguntas. Le pedí a todo el personal que revisara Los dos y no hacer de discutir actos de racismo y odio con los estudiantes:
Hacer:
- Tenga en cuenta el nivel de desarrollo de sus alumnos.
- Afirmar la identidad y la cultura como bienvenidas y integrales al aprendizaje (rutinariamente)
- Cree oportunidades seguras para que los estudiantes documenten o compartan sus sentimientos
- Anime a los estudiantes a compartir sus sentimientos con un adulto de confianza.
- Escuche a sus alumnos y hágales saber que hay personas con las que pueden hablar si necesitan apoyo adicional (consejeros escolares, psicólogos escolares y trabajadores sociales escolares)
- Empoderar a los estudiantes para cambiar el futuro, identificando injusticias pasadas y presentes y encontrando formas de construir un mundo mejor
No:
- Comparta imágenes de violencia gráfica con los estudiantes.
- Comparta fuentes primarias con insultos o caricaturas con los estudiantes, especialmente insultos raciales o caricaturas
- Asuma que estudiantes particulares están traumatizados o simulan traumas durante la instrucción.

Tolerar el racismo o el acoso en la escuela.
- Requerir que todos los alumnos participen en la conversación
Nuestros maestros, consejeros, administradores y todo el personal creen que juntos creamos espacios valientes y seguros para escuchar y colaborar. Estamos aprendiendo y interactuando con nuestros líderes de equidad para poder apoyar a los estudiantes y asegurarnos de que se sientan escuchados y puedan procesar con un adulto de confianza en la escuela si es necesario. No dude en comunicarse con nuestros consejeros o personal clínico si tiene una solicitud específica para su estudiante.
