Dear GBE Families,
I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Amy Showker has been named the new assistant principal for Greenbriar East Elementary School.
Mrs. Showker has served as the acting assistant principal at Greenbriar East since March 2, 2020 by assuming my previous position. Prior to the acting assistant principal position, Mrs. Showker was an Educational Specialist supporting schools implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support from July 2017 to March 2020 in Regions 2 and 5. Mrs. Showker was also the Educational Specialist for ESY and Assessment with the Office of Special Education Instruction. Mrs. Showker served as a resource teacher at Bull Run Elementary and an Assessment Coach at South County High School. Earlier in her career she was a K-12 Special Education Curriculum Resource Teacher for the Department of Special Services. Her first year in FCPS was at South County Secondary as a Special Education teacher, and before that she taught Social Studies at Chilhowie High School in Chilhowie, VA.

We are thrilled to bring Mrs. Showker’s expertise as an instructional leader to our GBE Administrative Team. As the MTSS Educational Specialist in Regions 2 and 5, she has facilitated collaborative work with the Office of School Support and other central office teams to implement a coherent K-12 approach to implementing MTSS that aligns with the FCPS Theory of Action. She modeled, observed, and provided feedback to teachers, concentrating on differentiation of Tier 1 instruction and behavior management systems. Mrs. Showker understands the importance of developing strong collaborative relationships to ensure a caring culture at GBE. She frequently delivers, and participates in, job-embedded, professional development opportunities to ensure staff are aligned with current instructional best practices. As an ESY and Assessment Educational Specialist, Mrs. Showker organized and interpreted data from state, division, and ad-hoc measures for students with disabilities. She collaborated with ESY administrators to analyze data, determine staff placements, and build a master schedule. She coached and managed six ESY sites, using frequent site visits and classroom walkthroughs. Mrs. Showker was featured in a Red Apple 21 inclusion and co-teaching video. We know her expertise will be an asset to the GBE team. She has had a noticeable and positive impact during her tenure as Greenbriar East’s acting assistant principal as we moved into Distance Learning in March.
Mrs. Showker holds a B.A. in Social Sciences from Emory & Henry College, a M.Ed. in Special Education from George Mason University, and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Virginia Tech. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Amy Showker as the new assistant principal of Greenbriar East Elementary School!

1. Tell us a little bit about what brought you to GBE.
About 8 or 9 years ago, I was attending an Adult and Community education course to learn to speak Spanish. It was there, that I met Melissa Dicker, GBE’s registrar. Melissa told me what a wonderful school GBE was and that there might be upcoming openings in the office. When I saw the Office Assistant position open, I applied and was fortunate enough to join FCPS and the GBE family about 7 years ago.
2. How did your career path lead to working in schools?
Prior to August of 2013, “working” in schools for me was all about volunteering. My sons are 10 years apart, which enabled me to become very much involved with their schools and educational paths. I was an active PTA member holding various offices. I enjoyed working in the classrooms as a class parent. I joined many committees, was the chess club coordinator and a junior great books leader. Throughout my many hours of volunteering, I was very familiar with and enjoyed working in a school environment. When I become an employee, getting paid to work there was just “icing on the cake”!
3. What is something we might not know about you?
Most people know that I am from New York (I may have a slight accent). But what they don’t know is that in 1980, I started my career as a CPA. I worked for a large accounting firm in New York City and our offices were located on the 101st floor of the World Trade Center. It was an exciting job and I was selected for several overseas assignments, taking me to the Middle East, India and parts of Asia. Today, I enjoy traveling with my family.
4. What was your favorite thing about school growing up?
Growing up, I enjoyed school very much and math was my favorite subject. I not only enjoyed learning new things in the classroom but also enjoyed joining many clubs and activities. I always liked being part of a team where I could make new friends and build long lasting relationships. I have fond memories of my school years.

Social Media Post of the Week
Hello GBE Artists!
First off, Ms. Miller and Mrs. Lucynski just want to let you all know how much we miss you all! We miss seeing your creative faces walking into our classrooms every day. We miss witnessing all the amazing artwork you create in front of us. Most of all, we miss the opportunity to be able to show you guys and your awesome artwork off at the end-of-year Chantilly Art Show! Even so, it’s been so great seeing the artwork you are all sharing with us on our Twitter (@GBE_Art), our Instagram (@GBE.artists), and on our Padlet sites! If you’re creating any artwork at all, PLEASE share it with us! We love to see how you’re keeping your creative juices flowing!
Even though we haven’t been teaching you in person, Ms. Miller and Mrs. Lucynski have been working so very hard to provide you with a bunch of artistic resources.
Every week day, we create posts on our Instagram. On Mondays, we feature a new art museum to check out (#museummondays). On Tuesdays, we feature a contemporary or modern artist and often include their Instagram handle for you to be able to follow their page too (#artisttuesdays)! On Wednesdays, we give you a piece of artwork that makes you really think about its meaning (#whatdoyouseewednesdays). On Thursdays, show you guys a flashback – whether it be an older Twitter post or project we’ve done with you in the past (#throwbackthursdays). And lastly, every Friday we have #sharingfriday where we like to feature your work (if you send it to us!) as well as our weekly video lesson. This video lesson is also shared on the GBE News Show every Thursday during the “Specialists Corner” segment.
If you’re keeping up-to-date on our GBE Student Site page for Art, you’ll also notice that Ms. Miller and Mrs. Lucynski have been posting even MORE for you! Every Monday, we post a lesson that you should be able to do with little to no art materials. We understand that not everyone has access to the materials we have at GBE, so we tried to think up ideas to create art anyway! We also post our Thursday News Show videos “in case you missed it”. Direct links are provided for our Twitter and Instagram pages as well as our Padlet links for K-1st grade work, 2nd-3rd grade work, and 4th-6th grade work. Feel free to upload ANY of your artwork for us to see and share! At the very bottom of our page, Ms. Miller and Mrs. Lucynski have even provided various links to other art-creating videos and FREE digital art applications.
We are looking forward to creating art in person with you very soon, Roadrunners! Never stop creating!
Love always,
Ms. Miller & Mrs. Lucynski

Dear 6th Grade Families,
It's hard to believe that the children you sent to Kindergarten in the fall of 2013 are now preparing to start middle school this fall! Although we won't be able to gather in the gym for a 6th grade promotion ceremony this year, we do want to honor our 6th graders with a special send-off on Friday, June 12th.
On June 12th, the admin team will be in front of the school with 6th grade classroom teachers during the following times:
8:30-10:00 - Ms. Henne
10:00 - 11:30 - Mrs. Ballard, Ms. Cahill
12:00-:30 - Mrs. Fairbanks
1:30 - 3:00 Ms. Cohen
3:00-4:30 - Ms. Tomaselli, Mrs. Roughani
Our specialists (P.E., Art, Music, Technology and Library) will also stop by throughout the day to join in the send-off!
In order to adhere to safety guidelines, please do the following on June 12th:
- Before leaving home, make sure that your 6th grade student(s) sit on the passenger side of the vehicle. Please also make a sign with your student's name and homeroom teacher clearly printed and display it in your window.
- Families will stay in their cars and drive through the bus loop.
- When your car arrives at the front of the line, we will give your student a certificate, a goodie bag, and take a photo while they remain in their car. We will also return your student’s belongings that were left at school before the closing.
- As you pull out of the bus loop, teachers will be standing at least six feet apart along the exit loop to wave and send your students off with a smile!
As one more way to celebrate our 6th graders, we invite you to decorate a door at your house--your front door, your student's bedroom door, a garage door, any door! You can use photos, wrapping paper, graduation-themed decorations, or whatever you'd like to celebrate your 6th grader. Take a photo of your decorated door and send it to our School Based Technology Specialist, Liz Caligiuri at EACaligiuri@fcps.edu by June 11th.
On June 15th, look for an email with photo collages of the decorated doors, photos of students with their certificates in cars, slides that 6th graders created themselves, and a special message to 6th graders from GBE teachers!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Natalie Lorenzi at nllorenzi@fcps.edu.
