Announcements

8th Grade Team Recognition: June 10, 2020 12:15-1:00

Although we find ourselves in a new Distance Learning environment, we want to recognize and acknowledge the great successes of our Kilmer 8th grade students and provide closure for our students . On Wednesday June 10th 12:15-1:00 (PAWS), each 8th grade team will host a virtual recognition ceremony.  All students will access the ceremony via Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and will receive the link information as the date approaches. We encourage all students to attend their team’s ceremony.

Families of award winners will be notified via e-mail the week of June 1st.  Although not every student will receive a recognition, we know the primary focus of the ceremony will be to provide closure for our students and an opportunity for our staff to impart some final remarks on the year.

Any questions please contact Chris Musgnug at ccmusgnug@fcps.edu.

Art re-creation

Mr. Raubacher's students showed off their creativity and art history knowledge during Distance Learning. His Art Foundations, Art Extensions, and Computers in Art students identified famous works of art and used their own ingenuity to recreate those artworks at home, using materials they had on hand. See the recreations here.

Final Grades & Report Cards

As a reminder, all fourth quarter grades will be No Mark (NM). In addition, there will be no final exams and/or culminating activity included as part of the final course grade calculation this year. A student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:

Average of Quarters 1, 2, & 3

Average of Quarters 1, 2, & 3 plus 1 grade distribution increase for final mark (see example above)*

1st Semester Grade

1st Semester Grade plus 1 grade distribution increase for final mark (see example above)*

Quality Points as per FCPS Grading and Reporting

Final grades will be available in ParentVUE on June 13, 2020; and report cards will be centrally mailed to all families, except those who have opted for paperless report cards.

FCPS Academic and Career Plan 2019-20

Your student has been working on his/her Academic and Career Plan (ACP) through Naviance Student, throughout the school year. During this period of distance learning, we encourage you to use Naviance Student with your child to explore college and career options.   Students and parents/guardians can view the ACP by logging onto Naviance Student together to explore the resources and exploratory activities.  You can do this by logging onto Blackboard (Parent or Student account) and then clicking on Naviance Student. Once in Naviance Student, click on the About Me tab, scroll down, and click Portfolio.

Please review your student’s Academic and Career Plan progress in Naviance Student and complete this Google form as verification by Wednesday, July 10, 2020.

If you have any questions about your student’s ACP please email his/her counselor.  For more information about the FCPS Academic and Career Plan program, visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/graduation-requirements-and-course-planning/ or the ACP website

Option to Expunge High School Courses

In accordance with Virginia state regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course. Parents must make this request no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year following completion of the course.

In 7th or 8th grade, parents may request that a student's high school mathematics, or world language course be expunged after the completion of the school year. Once the course is expunged from a high school transcript, the final grade will not be calculated into a student’s high school GPA.

The “Request to Expunge High School Courses taken in Middle School” form must be submitted to the student's middle school (7th graders) or high school (8th graders) counselor before the beginning of the second quarter of the next school year. Below is the link to the Request to Expunge High School Courses taken in Middle School form. Further information is on page 2.

https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/is104.pdf

If your child plans to expunge a high school credit course, please complete the form and attach by email to Sarah Groh (sfgroh@fcps.edu), Director of Student Services at Kilmer Middle School and Cindy Blakeley (CABlakeley@fcps.edu), Director of Student Services at Marshall High School (8th grade students only).  If you have further questions, please contact your child’s school counselor.
