Dear Wolftrap Families,
It is hard to believe that the school year is over in just two short weeks. Please remember that the last day of virtual teaching is Thursday, June 11. Thank you to the 360 families who were able to pick up their children’s belongings last Friday. We only have 45 bags remaining. Please plan on driving by Wolftrap this WEDNESDAY (June 3) between 4:00 and 6:00 PM to get your bags if you were not able to get them last week! If you are out of town and cannot come this Wednesday, please see if a friend or neighbor could pick up your items for you! We are not able to store them through the summer so they need to be picked up on Wednesday. Please remember to place a sign in the windshield with your child's last name when you drive up for an easier process.
We look forward to enjoying these last several days with your children! We are making the most of our time together by celebrating the moments that remain, as well as ensuring our students and families are informed about the learning that our county will be supporting this summer. As previously shared by the county, there will be access to a variety of instructional experiences across all school levels. This Continuity of Learning will take place between June 29th-July 31st. Each student will receive mathematics and language arts centrally created workbooks for the summer. Our Instructional Services Department is also identifying a variety of digital resources and activities. Each school is hiring one teacher at each grade level to hold an hour of virtual office hours per week to address student questions.
We know that you may have already planned a busy summer for your families, and that it is your choice whether you encourage your children to partake in these experiences. We also understand that children may need a break from online instruction, and that frankly, you may, too. Just know that no matter what you decide, we will support you. We are prepared to return in the fall, to whatever model of instruction is decided upon, with renewed energy, enthusiasm, and determination to make it a great year! To this end, please view these Continuity of Learning resources as a meaningful opportunity for ongoing support that will bridge this year with next.
Sincerely,
Teresa Khuluki Principal

Safety Patrols for Next Year
As you know, we are awaiting details for a plan for next school year. Since we are not yet sure about how many patrols may be needed or what duties they can complete, we are going to postpone the application process for new, rising 5th and 6th graders until further notice. Mr. Bechtle will remain as our fantastic patrol sponsor, and he will be coordinating with me on an application process when details are clear. Currently, you do not need to send Mr. Bechtle any requests for new patrol applications. We will communicate this process to all new, rising 5th and 6th graders when we have that information.
Rising 6th grade patrols, if you are interested in continuing with your patrol duties, there will be a spot for you. Mr. Bechtle is taking applications for captain for next year. If you are interested, please email him at asbechtle@fcps.edu.
Algebra 1 Honors Classes for Rising 7th Graders
Some of you who have students in the Advanced Mathematics Grade 6 class have been inquiring about Algebra 1 Honors for next year. I have included the letter that will be sent to those students in the class who took the IAAT test in January. Please let me know if I can answer any questions.
See below:
Earlier this year, your child took the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT). This was the first step in the screening process for placement in Algebra 1 Honors for the following academic year. Your child's IAAT score was sent to you in early March 2020.
Historically, for students to be placed in Algebra 1 Honors in grade 7, all of the following criteria had to be met:
- Successful completion of Advanced Mathematics Grade 6;
- An IAAT score at or above the 91st percentile; and
- A pass advanced score (500 or above) on the Grade 7 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) test.
Due to COVID-19 and the suspension of Spring 2020 SOL testing, the IAAT score will be used as a single data point in determining Algebra 1 Honors placement in grade 7 for the 2020-21 school year only.
The IAAT is an aptitude test that measures a child's readiness for abstract thinking. The Mathematics SOL test measures a student's mastery of prealgebra content. In the absence of the SOL test score, carefully consider your child's readiness for this high school algebra course and their mastery of prealgebra content.
During the summer, middle school staff will only use the IAAT to make a mathematics course placement based on your child's IAAT score. Middle schools will decide on one of the following:
- If your child met the criteria (an IAAT score at or above the 91st percentile), he or she will be placed in Algebra 1 Honors.
- If your child did not meet the criteria (an IAAT score below the 91st percentile), he or she will continue their advanced mathematics coursework and be placed in Mathematics 7 Honors.
*** If your child is attending Kilmer Middle School and qualified for Algebra 1 Honors but you would prefer a Mathematics 7 Honors placement, please notify Sarah Groh (sfgroh@fcps.edu), Director of Student Services at Kilmer Middle School by July 1 in order for Math 7 Honors to remain on your child’s schedule.
All students who qualify for Algebra 1 Honors are expected to complete an Algebra 1 Honors Preparation Module. You will receive details from your middle school.
Sincerely,
Dr. Maggie Grove Assistant Principal and Testing Coordinator
In our last Connection message, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on this year and how to stay connected over the summer.
Reflecting on this year. The end of the year is quickly approaching. What a whirlwind it has been! We celebrate our successful hosting of over 10 events, 7 programs, and accomplishing 90% of our fundraising goal. None of these activities happen without all our dedicated and creative parents and community volunteers. We would like to say THANK YOU for your unwavering support of our children, our teachers and our school this 2019-2020 school year!
Stay Connected. As we close out the school year, we continue to monitor the ongoing FCPS COVID-19 guidance as we move into summer and towards the start of the school year. Communication will be key as we close our doors on this school year and enter into the next. Stay connected with us via our Wolftrap Elementary Facebook Page, PTA Website and PTA email distribution list to get the latest information on Yearbook distribution, Camp Invention, Sprout delivery & distribution, Kindergarten/First Grade playdates, and Early Summer/Fall PTA Events.
We hope you have a wonderful summer! Stay safe Wolftrap! Don’t hesitate to contact us.

Looking forward to next year! There are still definite needs for volunteering, in particular Odyssey of the Mind, the Directory, AmazonSmile, AIM, Talent Show and Reflections.
Please consider helping out where you can, but don't worry! There are always other mentors and volunteers to help at Wolftrap. It's easy to have an impact in a way that's manageable for you. And it's the single best way to know the school from your child's perspective. Take a look and find your volunteering sweet spot today!

The Odyssey of the Mind season ended abruptly this year, just before teams were to compete in the Regional Tournament. We won't be discouraged though, as Wolftrap has supported teams for this program for more than 10 years! Look for announcements in August as we call for problem-solvers, team parents, and coaches! I am also looking for a parent to team up with me to co-ordinate the Wolftrap Odyssey teams, as we've had 5-8 teams representing our school the last few years! Questions? E-mail Stephanie Burdett at sdburdett@fcps.edu.

Next year’s Reflections theme has been released, which is “I Matter Because”. Everyone has time right now so start working on your submissions!!! Rising 6th Graders please remember that this is a National contest in all the schools, so you should be able to submit a project at Kilmer MS or whichever school you attend next year as well.
The manner of submitting art work for next year will be updated as things become more clear about the school year, but in the meantime, don’t stop creating!! Especially now, when creativity can be an incredible outlet for some of what you are all experiencing in a world that has changed dramatically.
Check out the PTA website for updated contest information. Please contact Tara Holtaway for questions.
Thank you to all this year’s participants!!
