Good afternoon Woodson Families!
Happy Memorial Day to all our families with a special thank you to the families who have served our country. I hope everyone is able to rest and recharge this weekend. As you may have seen in FCPS news, the FCPS school tracks and tennis courts re-opened today! Fields remain closed for now, but this is one positive step in the reopening process!
We have been furiously working as a county on the details for the senior events. Our first senior event will be available on TUESDAY, May 26th at 7PM when we will show the Senior Awards video. It will be available to watch any time starting Tuesday, May 26th on the Class of 2020 Google site until Monday, June 15th.
Parents, your seniors will receive an email to their fcpsschools.net account in the next week from MarchingOrder or StageClip. Please remind them to not delete it! We will also notify them by way of their Class of 2020 Google site and social media. This email will provide students their instructions for uploading their video for the Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video which will air on Tuesday, June 30th on Channel 99 at 11AM. It will also be available on our school website after it airs.
Information on the senior photo opportunity will come next week.
All senior families should have received an eNotify message last week about item pick up and drop off. This email will repeat today at 5PM and next Thursday at 11AM. Please look for this message. The details will also be posted on our website. Please note that we need families to adhere to pick up and drop off times as we are organized based on those times. If you did not fill out an order form for a cap and gown back in December at the senior meeting, we will be reaching out to you next week to verify your height so we can pull a cap and gown for you. We look forward to seeing everyone to hand them their caps and gowns at senior pick up, June 1st, 2nd and 3rd. If you have any questions please contact Amanda Burke at ajburke@fcps.edu.
All underclass families should have received an eNotify message last week about item pick up and drop off. This email will repeat several times prior to Monday, June 8th the first day of pick up / drop off and Wednesday, June 10th is the second day of pick up / drop off. Please note that we need families to adhere to pick up and drop off times as we are organized based on that schedule.
Summer program information will come to families of students who have failed a course or who are recommended for intervention in a course. The school counselors will be in touch as the year draws to an end. FCPS will also offer continuity of learning for students using self-directed digital materials available online. All students will have the opportunity to practice mathematics and literacy skills and participate in virtual office hours with math or English teachers for support and connection. This program is free to all students and more information about continuity of learning resources will be provided before the end of the school year.
As we begin to wrap up this highly unusual year, I want to thank our families, teachers and community members for the support and dedication to continuity of learning for our students. Without this unwavering support, we could not have pulled off thousands of synchronous sessions over the last month.
Stay tuned for information on what next year will look like, the School Board will make that decision toward the end of June.

2. Senior Awards Ceremony Video
In lieu of our traditional senior awards ceremony, Woodson will honor our class of 2020 with a senior awards ceremony video that will be available for viewing on Tuesday May 26th at 7PM on the Class of 2020 Google Classroom site and Cav Kiosk.
All seniors and parents/guardians are invited and encouraged to view the video. Seniors who are receiving awards, and will be named specifically in the video, will receive a personal email through Naviance Student with the subject line: SPECIAL Personal Invitation. Seniors should be sure to look for an email sent to the account they have listed in Blackboard.
3. Senior Visual Art Show
The Senior Virtual Art Show is now posted on the Woodson HS website.
Walk through the 5 Galleries to view the amazing works by our graduating Seniors. You can view the full size of the artwork for each thumbnail image, by clicking to expand to view the full piece of art.
4. Woodson Students Win Achievement Awards in Writing
This year, schools nominated 370 students to participate in the Achievement Awards in Writing Program for juniors. Of those, 137 were selected to receive Certificates of Superior Writing and 233 received Certificates of Nomination. A complete list of winners will be posted on the NCTE website soon.
Congratulations to Sophia Labys and Isabella Reymann for being recognized for their Superior Writing in the National Council of Teachers 2020 Achievement Awards in Writing Competition for juniors.
Congratulations to Kiera O’Connor and Kate Waldron for receiving Certificates of Nomination.
5. Woodson Students Support LLS
Woodson students Naomi White and Samantha Meyers dedicated countless hours this winter fundraising for Team Cure It, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Students of the Year campaign. This was a seven-week fundraising challenge benefitting LLS’s mission of curing blood cancers.
Naomi's Team Curt It, raised over $185,000 for LLS's mission!
Samantha's team, Knock Out Blood Cancer, raised over $111,000 and was also recognized with a Top Fundraiser award and portfolio linking opportunities.
These teams along with 34 other candidate teams across the DC Metro area, collectively raised over $2.7 million, setting an example for this campaign on a national level.
6. Click and They're Gone! Only 250 Yearbooks Left!
There are only 250 books left to purchase!!! Prices go up after June 1st from $80 to $90. Order your yearbook today!
Here are some frequently asked questions about yearbook.
Is the yearbook still being published?
Yes! The staff worked hard after the school closing to finish the book on time! We have sold lots of baby ads and plenty of books. It’s happening.
When is distribution?
We don’t know yet. Right around the time we finished the main book, the Kansas City plant was being shut down due to COVID 19. But it reopened May 4! We’ll keep the community posted as we get new information.
What will distribution look like?
Not sure yet, but the plucky yearbook staff can make it work! It will be done with safety and social distancing. When we have a distribution plan, we will get the word out!
Are there photos of spring sports?
Sadly, the spring sports seasons ended abruptly. So there is not the usual spring supplement with photos of spring happenings. But thankfully the teams posed for team portraits, and those WILL be included in the main book.
Is there coverage of COVID 19 and the school closure?
Yes! The yearbook staff pulled some coverage together of this bizarre time in Woodson’s life. Plus of course there is coverage of that wonderful time when we were together in school.
Can students still order the book?

7. Where are You Going to School Next Year?
If you will not be attending Woodson High School this fall, please let Woodson Student Services know now. Please click here and fill out this form.

8. Career Center Volunteers Needed
The WTW College and Career Center is recruiting parent volunteers for the 20-21 school year.
Rising 9th grade parents and rising sophomore parents are especially welcome and will benefit the most from this opportunity.

10. This is My Brave Auditions
Auditions for This is My Brave have been extended through the end of August. Fairfax County is seeking storytellers who are high school students with a 5-minute story to share about Teen Mental Health via poetry, original music, comedy, essay or other artistic expression.

11. May Is Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Many students struggle with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. If you have any concerns about anxiety, peer relationship problems, depression, or other social and emotional issues your child may be experiencing, please contact your school psychologist, school social worker, or school counselor. They are available for consultation and support.

CrisisText Is Available for Students 24/7
Parents: Any student who is feeling extremely overwhelmed or is in crisis can connect with CrisisText. Students just need to text “NEEDHELP” to 85511 or call 1-800-273-TALK. Please feel free to share this information as appropriate.
12. 30 Minute Consultation with a FCPS Clinician
Any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student.
This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s emotional well-being during their time away from school. Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time. Information about community resources will also be made available. Parents can schedule a phone consultation online.
This service is not intended for mental health emergencies. If an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911. Additionally, students and families can access mental health support online if there is a crisis of emergency during the time of the closure.
13. Fourth Quarter & End of Year
Providing Feedback to Students/Parents and Monitoring Progress: Teachers should provide feedback such as comments on quality of work and guidance for improvement.
- Assignment “marks” will be entered into the gradebook and will be: Proficient, Attempted, Not Attempted
- This data will be considered to positively influence the final course grade
- Students and families will be able to see “marks” in SIS, though weekly emails will not be sent since there will not be a Qtr 4 grade
Calculating Final Grades
Final Exams: There will be no final exam and/or culminating activity included as part of the final course grade calculation this year.
Year-Long Courses - Calculating Final Grade
- Teachers have the discretion of raising a student's final grade by one grade distribution (B to B+), based on demonstrated proficiency of Qtr 4 learning.
- A student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:
- Avg of Qtrs 1, 2, & 3
- Avg of (Qtrs 1, 2, & 3) plus 1 grade distribution increase consideration
- 1st Semester Grade
- 1st Semester Grade plus 1 grade distribution increase consideration
- Quality Points as per FCPS Grading and Reporting
Current Semester Courses - Calculating Final Grade
- Schools/teachers have the discretion of raising a student's final grade by two grade distributions (B to A-), based on demonstrated proficiency of Qtr 4 learning.
- A student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:
- Qtr 3 Average
- Qtr 3 Average (w/up to a two grade distribution increase consideration).
Last Day of School
The last day of school for all students (except seniors) is Friday, June 12. Seniors’ last day of school is Wednesday, May 27.
Summer Courses
Additional summer offerings and support through FCPS summer learning programming are being discussed and will be shared as soon as available pending developments with the state-wide closure of schools.
14. New NOVA JumpStart Opportunity
NOVA announced the launch of JumpStart, a new opportunity for current and rising seniors to take up to two, tuition-free online college courses this summer. NOVA has identified a specific set of courses available through this initiative, including courses for NOVA degree requirements that are also highly transferable credits to four-year institutions as well as coursework in cloud computing through a collaboration with Amazon Web Services.
FCPS is excited to partner with NOVA on this opportunity and will share more information for students and families as additional details about qualifications and registration emerge.
15. FAQs About Refunds and Fees
Question: What is the status of refunds for fees paid for various activities that are not going to happen due to the pandemic?
Answer:
- Teachers, sponsors, and supervising administrators have been working with vendors and travel companies.
- Refunds for field trips are issued only if the vendor/travel company is providing refunds. Refunds are prorated based on the amount given by the vendor/travel company.
- Travel companies and vendors may just issue a credit to the student’s name on the reservation for a postponed field trip.
- We will issue a refund for a field trip once the vendor or travel company returns the money to Woodson High School. This is based on the amount / percentage refunded.
- Class fees will be refunded at the end of the year as usual based on what is not used on consumables in the class.
- These will typically be issued through the credit card on file in MySchoolBucks.
Question: Can students get a refund on his parking fee?
Answer: Yes. If you paid the full amount you will receive $50 (1/4 of the year). A check will be sent to your house from FCPS. They are currently working on this process, and it will take some time. The school does not have any control over this process.
16. Lunch Money Refunds and Transfers
If you would like to request a refund of money on your student's MySchoolBucks lunch account or transfer the funds between students' accounts, please complete the following instructions.
