GBE Happenings 5.20.2020

Dear GBE Families,

Our staff has enjoyed celebrating College Week! Thank you to Mrs. Loht and Mrs. Shin for leading this effort all week. I also want to give a shout-out to our amazing teachers, front office team, and custodians. They are working around the clock to organize student belongings, contacting families, and preparing for our Student Belongings Curbside Pickup.

We are dividing curbside pickup by grade level due to the size of our school. Preschool, Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade families received an E-Notify message on Monday evening to sign up for a time to pick up student belongings this Friday. If you still need to sign up, please use this link. I will send an E-Notify message with a Google Form link to complete for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade families soon with the date and details for the next curbside pickup. 6th grade will have a separate curbside pickup on June 12th.

Our sixth grade team is planning and communicating how we will celebrate our sixth graders. We hope to make this as memorable as possible given the circumstances. Our sixth graders are phenomenal students and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish in the future!

1.Tell us a little bit about what brought you to GBE.

I had been working at Woodley Hills ES for 9 years as an Office Assistant. For 5 of those years I was driving from Fairfax to Alexandria with my 2 kids that attended Woodley Hills as well. As my kids were getting older and playing sports, I realized I needed to find a school closer to home. I joined the GBE Family March 2016 as an Office Assistant. This past October I became the Administrative Assistant.

2. How did your career path lead to working in schools?

I had moved to Gatlinburg, TN for 2 years. When I returned to the area, my mom asked me if I was interested in being an Office Assistant at a school not far from where she worked. My mom was and currently is the Administrative Assistant at Woodlawn ES. Before her, my aunt was the Administrative Assistant at Woodlawn ES, then a Region Administrative Assistant, and retired as an Administrative Assistant for the School Board. I also had another aunt who was a PE teacher at Union Mill ES. After she passed away many years ago, Union Mill dedicated the gymnasium in her honor. I guess you could say it’s in my blood “LOL”.

3. What is something that we might not know about you?

I grew-up in Alexandria, VA where I graduated from West Potomac HS. I have 2 beautiful children, Kaitlyn 16 a sophomore at Centreville HS and Jackson 13 a 7th grader at Liberty MS. I love baseball and a huge Washington Nationals fan. I try to go to games as much as possible with my family.

4.What was your favorite thing about school growing up?

My most favorite thing about school was the friends and memories I made. My senior year I was in a Business/Finance class and we went on a field trip to Disney World. I also got to celebrate my 18th birthday while we were there. We got to go behind the scenes and ride the rides before the park even opened. It was a great experience.

COLLEGE WEEK AT GBE!

College Week

This week GBE is celebrating College Week!  College Week is a time to explore and promote the idea that every student can aspire to attend college after graduation.  At the elementary school level, our main ideas include setting goals, establishing good work habits, and exploring different subjects that students can study in college.

This week teachers have been sharing some of their college experiences during live sessions and on the morning news.  We have also created a Padlet display so students can explore each staff member’s college days.  Thursday, May 21st, is a spirit day for students to wear college shirts, jerseys, hats, or make a college sign to show off their college spirit!  Their photos can be uploaded to social media with the hashtag #GBEcollegespirit or e-mailed to Allison Loht at abloht@fcps.edu
