Schools and offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, for the Memorial Day Holiday. Virtual learning will resume on Tuesday, May 26.
IF we were still in school and you came to visit room 115 in the 6th grade hallway, you would meet the best 6th grade class in the whole world! Our 22 students include 11 brainy, brave boys and 11 gifted, great girls. Our class was marvelous at working together in teams and did many projects and presentations on science and social studies concepts. Always respectful and kind to whichever classmates with whom they worked.
In addition to our hard-working attitude, we are also a caring community. A number of our classmates were PE Pals and worked with Mr. Scharkowski and a special education PE class to help those younger students do the activities. We also read every other week to our neighbor book buddies in second grade, Ms. Evan’s class. A third example of our concern for others is our Collaborative Classroom work with Ms. Garrett’s class. Each day, a different group of our students went to visit and read with this group of buddies. So, not only were we kind and considerate to each other but contributive to the WHES community as a whole.
When I asked our team what they wanted me to share in this newsletter they mentioned the rewards - of course, they are children! We earned a reward 3 or 4 times this year when all students arrived every day of the week for class. After all, if you are not in class (bricks and mortar or virtual) it is difficult to learn. Other rewards were earned for the number of math problems solved bimonthly. To date, we have completed 33,287 math problems online, and counting! The rewards were mostly food - pizza, doughnuts, ice cream, or cupcakes. I wish I could award virtual cupcakes for all the continuing hard work.
If you are lucky enough to have one of these fine students in your household, count your blessings (and please give them a hug from me). Should you have the opportunity to get to know one of them better, you will be a richer person for the time spent. Best of luck my friends; I miss you terribly!
Ms. Janssen

It was WONDERFUL to see so many students and parents at the first day of K-2 Laptop distribution on Tuesday, May 19. We miss our WHES Beavers!

Data gathered by the state indicates that the meal sites operated by school districts during the extended school closure are only serving half as many breakfasts and one-third the number of lunches compared to a typical school day. The P-EBT (Pandemic Electronic Bank Transfer) program will provide critical food assistance to families so that children in Virginia do not go hungry during the COVID-19 crisis.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) families whose children are eligible for the federal free and reduced-price meal program can receive temporary food assistance from the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS). Families will receive a P-EBT(Pandemic Electronic Bank Transfer) for temporary food assistance to cover the cost of meals missed while schools are closed. ALL the families who attend Woodley Hills are potentially eligible to receive this benefit.
FCPS has submitted the names of families currently eligible for free and reduced-priced meals to the VDSS; currently eligible families do not need to apply or fill out additional forms to receive the funds. VDSS is working with the Virginia Department of Education to ensure that families currently receiving SNAP benefits will have funds loaded onto their EBT cards within the next two weeks.
Families are not required to be current SNAP recipients to qualify for P-EBT benefits. Families that are not currently receiving free and reduced-price meals can apply for the program by June 11. Families who do not receive SNAP benefits will receive an EBT card in the mail in the next 4-6 weeks. VDOE and VDSS ultimately approve eligibility and issue the benefit.
Families are encouraged to visit the Virginia P-EBT site to learn more. FCPS families can also contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services at 703-813-4800.
