Cardinal's Message
Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,
As we soar into another week of distance learning at Cunningham Park, some upcoming events are coming up quickly. Our Virtual Book Fair, kicked off last Friday and lasts through Monday, May 25th. The Book Fair can be found at the following website: https://www.bookwormcentral.com/. When you get to the site, simply enter our organization code, cpes, at the top of the bookworm home screen and begin your online shopping experience. Once you are shopping, you will find a “Teacher Wish List” where you can select books to be sent to your child’s teacher. Select “ship to school” at checkout and we will make sure the books make it to each teacher. Remember, all orders over $20 will be shipped directly to your home for free from the local Bookworm warehouse, where all safety precautions are being taken.
Tomorrow evening at 7:30pm will be the final PTA meeting of the year. It is also the last meeting for which Tracy McCarty will be PTA President. Please join us in expressing our deep appreciation for the time, sweat, and tears Tracy has put into her position these past two years. Her passion and love have shone throughout her work, and our children, school, and community are all the better for it!
Thank you Tracy, and to all the PTA board members, committee leaders, and volunteers who have dedicated your time, expertise, and resources toward cementing this enriched learning environment for Cunningham Park.
To those of you moving on to Thoreau next year, please remember, once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal. Goes for families too!
Sincerely,
Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

With thanks to my Socratic Seminar group, pictured AND not-pictured, for their constant inspiration!
“Just one more question!!” Tyler, a third grader at Cunningham Park Elementary School in Vienna, Virginia, rushed toward his screen, grabbing my attention. We had already said our “goodbyes.” Having run past our allotted time, students were all late for their next classes. My cursor hovered over the icon that would end the session and send us into darkness. The group of us, each in our own little cell, looked at him through our monitors.
“If the world is ours, can we change it?” He asked.
Yes. And We Must.

A Message from the Madison Pyramid Principals
Dear Families,
Our aim is to give you some peace of mind today—which is often underrepresented in these uncertain times. As our schools continue with distance learning, and our county moves forward with making decisions for next year, please know that computer and non-computer-based learning opportunities will persist, not just for the next month, but throughout the summer, as well.
You may have already read in an email issued by the county that continuity of learning will be furthered throughout this summer in a variety of ways. In the elementary and middle schools, a workbook (one-time mailing) and centrally developed, online learning opportunities will be advanced, whereas at the high school level, a calendar of digital activities in mathematics and language arts will be available to all students. One to two teachers, at each grade level, will support student needs through virtual office hours. Additional information will be forthcoming, including how the county will expedite Extended School Year (ESY) and other special education programming for Preschool Autism Class (PAC) students.
At this time, individual schools will also be communicating procedures for medication retrieval, personal item pick-up, and return of specific items, such as technology and instruments for students who are promoting or graduating. Each school is designing a process that is supportive of their community’s needs, and this distinction is especially important to note if you have children at multiple schools in FCPS. While some procedures will overlap between schools, it is unlikely that the entire process will be the same. Therefore, we ask for your continued patience and presumption of positive intent regarding these endeavors. As you can imagine, the return and retrieval of items is a challenging undertaking for our schools.
Once more, we feel that it is important to acknowledge how your support has carried our schools to this point. We simply cannot thank you enough for your encouragement and goodwill. We look forward to seeing you soon as you help us navigate these end-of-the-year expectations and virtual celebrations.
Warmly,
Greg Hood, Madison High School
Tom Lundy, Cedar Lane School
Catherine Cipperly, Thoreau Middle School
Michelle Makrigiorgos, Louise Archer Elementary School
Liz Calvert, Marshall Road Elementary School
John Carmichael, Vienna Elementary School
Katie Le, Cunningham Park Elementary School
Teresa Khuluki, Wolftrap Elementary School
Jennifer Hertzberg, Flint Hill Elementary School
