HORNET HAPPENINGS
May 15, 2020
Dear Halley Families,
Happy Friday! We are allowing our teachers to come to school in very small numbers to pack up student materials over the next two weeks. This process will take a much longer amount of time than it usually would, as we continue to follow the health department guidelines to ensure safety for all.
We will also begin coordinating family pick up of classroom materials and medication with appointments in June. We will communicate further information ASAP about the picking up of student items, which will be done through assigned times through a curbside pick-up process. All pick-ups will be in a socially distanced, drive-by setting following CDC and health department guidelines. We’ll also have instructions for how to drop off library books as well as musical instruments.
In the meantime, please continue to join our teachers on-line. They are so happy to see your children and engage them in learning! When students are happy, teachers are happy. When they’re both happy, We’re happy 😉.
Blessings, Mrs. Peerman, Ms. Johnson and Dr. Simpkins
We are asking each Halley 6th grader to submit a photo (or two) for our End of Year Honor. While we won’t be able to celebrate in the traditional way, we are working on something special! Please upload your photos to the link below by Monday, May 25th.

Registration Process
Staffing for next school year is supported by early registration. This helps to keep class sizes at optimal numbers for the best learning environment for all students.
Registration is open for all grade levels for the upcoming 2020 – 2021 school year. Currently, registration is occurring virtually with our registrar, Nicole Kendall. She is conducting enrollment interviews over the phone or via e-mail. If you need to register your child for school, please reach out to Ms. Kendall at nbkendall@fcps.edu.
Please note that once schools reopen to the public, parents will need to make an appointment to complete the registration and present all required original documentation (birth certificate, deed or lease, etc.).
Please share this information with friends or neighbors who also need to register!
Please contact our Halley Registrar, Nicole Kendall for more information and to register your child. You may reach her via email at nbkendall@fcps.edu

Ms. Hall’s Library Tidbit for the Week of May 18
Reading aloud to your child and allowing them to read books of their choice are both important steps to building lifelong readers. According to well-known author Jim Trelease in The Read-Aloud Handbook, “The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children. It is a practice that should continue throughout the grades” (2013).
As children get older, do not hesitate to continue reading aloud to them. Equally important is exposing children to a variety of genres and allowing them to choose the books they read. “Student book choice is the first step in getting children hooked on reading. When students have ownership of their reading, successful, independent readers begin to bloom” (Starke).
Take advantage of some of the Halley’s library resources:
- Encourage your child to participate in the weekly library lessons that relate to their LA content their teachers are using. All lessons are listed by week in Google Classroom.
- Join Ms. Hall on Tuesdays @ 1:30 for “Live” Story Time for K-2nd grade students. Google Classroom code: papygy4 If your student is in grades 3-6, consider joining one of the two book clubs with Ms. Hall. See information sent in the HH last week.
- Encourage your child to check out and read ebooks using MackinVIA app. Click here to watch the video on how to access MackinVIA.
- Explore one of the many databases that the library has to offer. Become an “expert” on a topic of choice! For grades K-2, use Pebble Go: https://site.pebblego.com/modules (username: fcps password: fcps). For grades 3-6, use World Book Student: https://worldbookonline.com/student-new/#/home (username: fairfax password: fairfax)
- Take advantage of the resources the Fairfax County Public Library has to offer as well. Consider checking out an ebook and reading it with your child. Click here for more information. If you do not currently have a library card, not to worry - you can register and finalize your card later when libraries reopen!
Feel free to contact Halley’s librarian, Ms. Hall with any questions: cghall@fcps.edu. Happy reading!

Dreambox Math is back at Halley!
We are pleased and excited to offer Dreambox math available now
through June 30, 2020 for all Halley students.
Dreambox is a K-8 digital math program that independent studies have found to raise student achievement and better prepare children for future successes. If you have a home account, Dreambox does not have capacity to merge your home account with our school account. Use whichever account you desire. Through the school account, teachers may assign certain focus areas and lessons for students to use. These assignments will be not be available through a home paid subscription or free home trial. Please decide which account option is best for your family. We are pleased to be able to bring Dreambox to all our students!
