5/15 RRMS School Updates

A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Rocky Run Parents and Students,

We recently received guidance from FCPS regarding the protocols they have put in place for the pick-up of student belongings that are still at school in lockers. Throughout this process, our top priority is the safety of our students, families, and staff members. In this email, you will find details about the process Rocky Run MS will implement for a curbside pick-up of student belongings. Additionally, if there is any student medication in our Health Room, that will be added to items being picked up from student lockers. Finally, we will schedule a separate event in June for students to drop off school-owned materials (laptops, library books, etc.) and to pick-up any End of the Year materials although we would accept books if they are brought to the school on pick up day.

Our curbside locker item pick-up will occur on the following days: Eighth grade students may pick-up their locker items on May 26 and May 27 based on student last name and seventh grade students will follow a similar procedure on May 28 and May 29.

Eighth Grade:

Tuesday, May 26 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM - 8th grade (Last Name A-L)

Wednesday, May 27 from 2:30 – 6:30 - 8th grade (Last Name M-Z)

Seventh Grade:

Thursday, May 28 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM - 7th grade (Last Name A-L)

Friday, May 29 from 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM - 7th grade (Last Name M-Z)

All student items contained in hallway lockers and gym lockers will be bagged and labeled for curbside pickup in the bus lane. Below is an outline of the pickup process:

Students and families should arrive on their designated pickup day at any time in the time frame given.

Drivers should enter the school campus via Stringfellow Road and line up in the Bus Lane for pick up.

Please provide to a Rocky Run staff member, your student’s last name, first name and student ID number.

Families will only be able to pick up the belongings of their own student.

In our ongoing effort to promote healthy practices and to promote social distancing, vehicle occupants must remain inside their cars.

Students who are unable to pick up their bagged items on the dates above should email their grade-level administrator to make other arrangements.

7th grade administrator: Christine Sciabica – cdsciabica@fcps.edu

8th grade administrator: Tom DeRusso – tgderusso@fcps.edu

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to me (atgoodloe@fcps.edu) and I will respond to you as soon as I am able.  I am grateful for your ongoing support and encouragement during this challenging time.

Sincerely,

Amy Goodloe, Principal

Positivity Project - Gratitude

You are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.

So, why is gratitude important?

Out of all 24 character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness and optimism. And, the great thing about gratitude is that it can be intentionally cultivated. Numerous studies have concluded that gratitude is like a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it gets – and the more you’re able to reap its benefits.

On a group level, gratitude is associated with reciprocity and social stability. Grateful people are more likely than their counterparts to feel a commitment to others – and believe in an interconnectedness of the world and its people. When a person does a favor for you, you tend to feel thankful and be motivated return the favor. Groups that operate with gratitude, then, are usually more cohesive.

Rising 8th Grade Students 20-21 Course Selections

To see the list of courses that your child selected for eighth grade, please log into your SIS ParentVUE account and click on the Course Requests tab. Directions for how to view your child’ course requests online in ParentVUE can be accessed at the following link : Online Course Requests in ParentVue . Students can also view their list of courses on the course request tab in SIS StudentVUE.

Please note the following important items:

  • This list is NOT a schedule, but a confirmation of the courses entered into the Student Information System.
  • Elective choices are subject to change based on space, teacher availability, schedule conflicts and academic intervention courses.

Please review this preliminary list of courses and look for the following errors:

  • Too few or too many classes
  • Absence of a required course
  • Inaccurate placement by grade or course level

Please contact your child’s school counselor if you have questions or concerns about the selected courses. Course requests are a firm commitment. Course request changes will not be accommodated after June 5.

Expunging High School Credits

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA) and weighted as such. Virginia state and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians of a middle school student who has completed a high school credit course to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

The request to remove a course from the transcript must be made in writing to the middle or high school that the student will attend the following year and prior to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year.

See Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.  If you have questions or concerns regarding this, please contact your child’s school counselor no later than June 13, 2020.  After this date, please contact your child’s high school counselor.

FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard)

All FCPS parents have access to their child's FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) account. Teachers will use this tool to share content with students and families during this time of distance learning.

If a teacher primarily uses their FCPS Google Classroom to share material, they will note it in FCPS 24-7 Learning to be sure parents are aware of content being shared. Parents do not have access to FCPS Google accounts, but may login with their child to view the content.

Your FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) login is the same as your SIS ParentVue login.

FCPS 2020 Mental Wellness Consultation Service

Any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their student’s emotional well-being during their time away from school.  Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time.  Information about community resources will also be made available.  To schedule a phone consultation, parents should click the following link: https://forms.gle/WKchwGnv4LkezQwG8.

This service is not intended for mental health emergencies.  If an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911.  Additionally, students and families can access mental health support if there is a crisis of emergency during the time of the closure.

Library Resources

All FCPS students have access to district-purchased ebooks and audiobooks through Destiny Discover and MackinVIA. Students can read ebooks and listen to audiobooks on the MackinVIA website or download the MackinVIA app to any device, using the blue Fairfax County button, NOT the Follett sign in.

Explore the Destiny Discover library catalog to find FCPS-purchased ebooks and audiobooks. Students also have access using the desktop icon on their school-issued laptop. For more information on how to use and access ebooks and audiobooks, use these tutorials found on the Library Google Site (accessed with a student's fcpsschools account).

Finally, for even more titles, the Fairfax County Public Library offers a wide selection of ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. If you do not have a library card, sign up for one on their website and gain instant access to these digital resources and more!

Feel free to contact Ms. Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu) or Ms. Bickford (elbickford@fcps.edu) with any questions related to e-reading.
