The Lion’s Roar
May 6, 2020
Good evening, Lane parents and guardians!
Happy May! As of today, there are fewer than six weeks left in the school year. During this challenging time, some days seem to drag on forever, but time is definitely still flying!
We are already working on staffing for the upcoming year and starting to plan for back-to-school, as much as we are able to do so with so much uncertainty still hanging over us as a county, as a state, and as a nation. But time does march on, and we want to make sure we hire the best available applicants and prepare for the best possible year, whatever circumstances may be come late summer.
We would like you to start thinking about the year ahead as well. If you have specific information you would like to share with us regarding placement for your child next year, please complete this Parent Input Form. Please note that requests for specific teachers should not be made and will not be honored.
Here are some additional reminders for the week ahead.
News & Notes
Teacher Appreciation Continues Through Friday
Thank you to all of the families who have already so generously showered so many of our staff members with words and tokens of thanks! As always, it is wonderful to be part of such a caring community! Our virtual Staff Appreciation Week continues through Friday. Here are the two PTA suggested themes for the remaining days:
Thursday, May 7 – BE POETIC: Write a poem about what you appreciate about a staff member or teacher and email it to this individual, with parental supervision.
Friday, May 8 – BE LANE LION PROUD: Wear your Lane spiritwear or lion attire and ask your parents to post a picture to our Lane Elementary PTA Facebook page and write what you appreciate about the faculty and staff at Lane! You could send the photo to your teachers too!
Remember that these ideas are just suggestions. Any message of thanks, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated!
Patrol Applications for 2020 – 2021 School Year Are Now Available Online! Deadline Extended to Monday, May 11th!
Lane Safety Patrol Applications are open! Any current 4th or 5th grader may apply to be a Safety Patrol. Notifications of acceptance will be emailed to the student’s school account and the parent’s email by May 26, 2020. Virtual Invention Convention Update!
Lane’s VIRTUAL Invention Convention for 2020 will be held the last week of May. Students participating will receive a Flipgrid link to post a video showcasing their invention at the beginning of the week. Later in the week the link will be shared with the Lane community for other students to “visit” the Invention Convention and add comments.
The Invention Convention is open to any student at Lane. It will be more open-ended this year, but as always the goal is for students to have fun identifying a problem and then working through the inventing process to come up with a solution. Families can access the Inventor’s Journal and other resources on the Lane AAP Blackboard website. The inventor’s journal walks students through the invention process from coming up with an idea to naming the invention. As in years past, students who participate will receive a certificate of accomplishment.
Please email Ms. Simon at lesimon@fcps.edu by Friday, May 22nd if your child intends to participate in the Virtual Invention Convention this year.
From the Lane Library: May Is National Photography Month!
May is (among many other things) National Photography Month, and the Lane library will still be doing an activity related to that remotely! Every week Mrs. Chozick will post a new photography topic on Flipgrid. Students will submit their own photo and then post a video explaining how their photo connects to the topic. Please don’t use stickers or add-ins on any photos. The link to the Flipgrid for Photography Week #1 is: https://flipgrid.com/d8422d21. Grown-ups are welcome to submit responses too!
Registration Process Update!
Registration is now open for all grade levels for the upcoming 2020 – 2021 school year. With the building closed, registration will happen virtually, with our registrar, Jami O’Hagan, conducting enrollment interviews over the phone or via e-mail. If you need to register your child for school, please reach out to Mrs. O’Hagan at jjohagan@fcps.edu. The Temporary Intake (Enrollment) Interview Form with the questions that will be asked during the process is posted on our school website.
Please note that once schools reopen to the public, parents will need to make an appointment to complete the registration and present all required original documentation (birth certificate, deed or lease, etc.).
Please share this information with friends or neighbors who also need to register!
Has Your Address Changed or Will It Be Changing?
If you have moved or will be moving before the end of the school year, please be sure to contact Mrs. O’Hagan at jjohagan@fcps.edu to let her know. This is to ensure that your family will get learning packets and other important information for the rest of the year. Please note that even if you have moved or do move out of the Lane boundary before the end of the school year, your child(ren) can continue to access Lane distance-learning resources through the last day of school.
