Teacher Appreciation Week

This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week!  I want to thank all of our teachers for everything they have done and continue to do for all of our students!  We have an incredible staff at Oakton and would love your help in celebrating them this week!

Since we are not together we would appreciate it if you could reach out to teachers to celebrate their impact on students!  A simple email of thanks from a student or a parent can be so meaningful for our staff!

Renovation Update

This week work continues throughout the entire building and campus.  As a reminder, our campus remains entirely closed.  This includes our fields and larger campus.  This is due to both safety concerns surrounding COVID-19 but also concerns around safety due to active construction work zones in all areas.

Our new main office furniture has begun to be delivered this week and will be installed.  New classroom furniture for the addition was finalized and ordered last week with delivery and installation in July.

Please visit our website for more information on the scope of the renovation and the renderings of what the building will look like when completed.

Distance Learning Schedule

General Information

Distance Learning Updates/Resources

Last week we had a successful week of distance learning!  We are excited to keep that momentum going for the coming weeks!

  • Important resources regarding the distance learning plan can be found here.
  • All school closure resources for Oakton High School can be found here.
  • All school closure updates and resources for FCPS can be found here.
  • To better keep in touch with students during this time, information will routinely be posted on the Class level google classrooms.

Grading Information

Third Quarter ended on Friday May 1. Both SIS ParentVue and SIS StudentVue will not be available this week as teachers work to finalize grades.  Both will be available again on Saturday May 9.

We have also posted comprehensive grading information on Oakton’s website, along with a voiceover presentation.

AP Testing Updates

Monday, May 11 is the first day of AP testing. We want to make sure all students are ready for their exams and are prepared to be successful. Please read to the end of this message for the full schedule of AP exams.

We have prepared an FAQ slide show to answer questions you might have about testing this year. All of this information can also be found on Oakton’s AP testing page. If you are not able to attend your scheduled exam, please contact Ms. Warehime at kjwarehime@fcps.edu.

Spring Cougar Commendations

It’s time for Spring Cougar Commendations. Teachers are in the process of nominating students to be recognized for their achievements in one of the five Fairfax County Portrait of a Graduate attributes. Nominated students will be recognized at a virtual ceremony later this month. In addition, we also have Faculty Cougar Commendations to recognize OHS faculty/staff for their hard work, passion, and innovation. Parents are invited to use this nomination form to recognize a faculty/staff member for their dedication. All nominations are due by Friday, May 15. Faculty members will be recognized at a virtual staff meeting. It means so much to our faculty and staff to know that you notice their efforts. Please contact Margaret Moran (memoran@fcps.edu) or Sara Dornauer (sadornauer@fcps.edu) with questions.

Senior Survey

SENIORS – Each year, FCPS seniors complete a brief, 8-question survey at the end of their Senior year. The survey is online in Naviance Student and usually takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. This is how Student Services sends the final transcript to the college you are attending.  If you are pursuing employment, military service, career education, a year off, etc., this is how we celebrate you!

Student Services

School counselors would like to connect with all juniors to discuss their postsecondary plans and steps you can begin now to prepare for the fall.  Students should check their FCPS email for a message from their school counselor about scheduling a virtual session following AP exams.  Juniors may also visit the Oakton School Counseling Site, the FCPS Google Site for Juniors, and Google Classroom for more helpful tips and resources!

The Student Services April newsletter is available here for a recap  of what has been going on in Student Services. This is also a great preview of things to come in the month of May.  Additionally, we encourage both parents and students to visit the distance learning site for resources for each grade level.

Library Office Hours

The librarians welcome students to join them for Library Office Hours for help completing research tasks, accessing library resources, and getting book recommendations!

Library Office Hours will be:

  • Tuesdays during Cougar Time (10:30-11:15)

  • Fridays from 11:00am-12:00pm

In Blackboard, select the Oakton HS Library class. Select the Collaborate Ultra button on the left, then select the appropriate session listed, and use the link to the right to sign in and join a library session!

If you need to contact the librarians for help outside of office hours, email them at kmrowley@fcps.edu and rnewland@fcps.edu.  They will get back to you as quickly as they can.

ANNOUNCING….The Virtual ANGP Prize Raffle on May 8th, 2020

We have made the decision to cancel ANGP. We are certain the event would have been fantastic, and we share in the disappointment resulting from the necessity of its cancellation. Superintendent Brabrand and Principal Lane have stated that an in-person graduation will not be held on June 4 due to the Governor’s shut-down order.  If a later in-person graduation or an in-person celebration becomes possible, an event can be planned to allow our seniors to celebrate together. Certainly, the Class of 2020 will have a unique graduation story to tell through the years!

We are excited to announce our Virtual ANGP Prize Raffle for all the prizes we currently hold. This raffle is available to all Oakton High School seniors.

Raffle tickets are $5 for each senior who had not yet purchased an ANGP ticket. Each senior may only have one ticket, so everyone has one chance to win. Any family that purchased an ANGP ticket is receiving their one raffle ticket, so will not need to purchase one. Any family that purchased a sign and made an additional donation with the sign purchase, but did not purchase an ANGP ticket, will be issued a raffle ticket.

On May 8th we will raffle off the prizes from most expensive to least expensive. The exact time and virtual location of the drawing will be announced soon. Any prize that fits in an envelope will be mailed. Other prizes will have to be picked up from a designated home in a “contactless” pick up. Winners will be notified by email and requested to pick up the prize within one week. After one week, a reminder will be sent to those who have not picked up a prize. If a winner does not respond in the next seven days, the prize will be re-raffled.

Class of 2020 Yard Signs - PTSA

We hope that you all are getting through this crazy time with your senior(s) at home. You probably feel like we do, really bummed that our seniors don't get the traditional last few months of public school, where they can enjoy the camaraderie of making after-graduation decisions and dealing with the stresses of so many changes to come.

With so much uncertainty about pretty much everything, we thought we would remind you of your opportunity to celebrate your senior in a very basic, fun way. Our senior yard signs are still available and will be delivered straight to your front yard! Click the link below to purchase yours for $20. We have a limited quantity, so get yours today and don't miss out.
