A Note from Dr. Goodloe
Dear Rocky Run Students and Families,
It has been a GREAT week of learning! We have been JOYOUS as we have collaborated to strengthen our connections with students and continue our learning together. Thank you for your support and for encouraging your students to stay engaged and active in digital learning. The teachers have raved about student attendance and work completion and how much they have enjoyed seeing them.
I enjoyed visiting with several of our students over lunch today in our first "Chat and Chew". I was so excited to hear from students and connect. I will continue to offer Family coffees and student chats throughout the remainder of the school year. The slides and recording are included below:

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to me (atgoodloe@fcps.edu) and I will respond to you as soon as I am able. I am grateful for your ongoing support and encouragement during this challenging time.
Sincerely,
Amy Goodloe, Principal

Updated Third Quarter Grading Timeline
The third quarter ends today, Friday, May 1, 2020. As you know, the timeline has been extended to this week so our students could work with their teachers to make up third quarter missing/incomplete assignments and complete reassessments by today, May 1, 2020.
Please note the following items:
- ParentVUE/StudentVUE access will be turned off to allow for teachers to enter grades from Friday, May 1 at 4 PM through Saturday, May 9 at 6 AM. Grades will be available in ParentVUE/StudentVUE on Saturday, May 9 at 6 AM.
- Report card mailings to all parents/guardians who have not opted into electronic delivery. The FCPS central office anticipates the printed report cards will be provided to the postal service by May 23. Actual delivery to homes will be dependent on the postal service.
Please feel free to contact your child’s subject teacher and/or counselor for any questions regarding third quarter grades.
Go Paperless! Report Card Option Available
Parents/Guardians can take advantage of the paperless option by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option. This option must be selected prior to May 12th to prevent the 3rd quarter report card from being mailed.
Expunging High School Credits
High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA) and weighted as such. Virginia state and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians of a middle school student who has completed a high school credit course to have that course expunged from the student’s record.
The request to remove a course from the transcript must be made in writing to the middle or high school that the student will attend the following year and prior to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year.
See Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form. If you have questions or concerns regarding this, please contact your child’s school counselor no later than June 13, 2020. After this date, please contact your child’s high school counselor.
2020 RRMS Yearbook
We know that the school closure has caused a lot of upheaval for students. But one thing remains -- the Rocky Run Middle School yearbook will be a way to remember all the moments, big and small, from this year. Yearbook distribution will look different than usual, but it will happen. And now more than ever, we know your student will cherish an opportunity to look back at this unforgettable year.
Visit www.YearbookOrderCenter.com and use school code #5333 to place your order today.
Thanks in advance,
The 2020 Rocky Run MS Yearbook Staff
FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard)
All FCPS parents have access to their child's FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) account. Teachers will use this tool to share content with students and families during this time of distance learning.
If a teacher primarily uses their FCPS Google Classroom to share material, they will note it in FCPS 24-7 Learning to be sure parents are aware of content being shared. Parents do not have access to FCPS Google accounts, but may login with their child to view the content.
Your FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) login is the same as your SIS ParentVue login.

Resources for you and your family
Here are a few quick links to resources from FCPS:
FCPS 2020 Mental Wellness Consultation Service
Any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their student’s emotional well-being during their time away from school. Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time. Information about community resources will also be made available. To schedule a phone consultation, parents should click the following link: https://forms.gle/WKchwGnv4LkezQwG8.
This service is not intended for mental health emergencies. If an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911. Additionally, students and families can access mental health support if there is a crisis of emergency during the time of the closure.
Positivity Project
This week's character trait is LEADERSHIP.
So, why does leadership matter?
For individuals, leadership is a way to achieve what you know is important, as groups of people invariably achieve more than individuals. If you want to achieve your vision for the future, you need to inspire others to join you. As an individual’s ability to lead develops, so does that person’s confidence and sense of self-efficacy. However, common dangers to guard against are egotism and arrogance.
A group’s effectiveness and sense of inspiration are tied directly to the leader. Study after study shows that leaders (and managers) have the biggest influence on group success and morale. Leaders can be developed and it starts with character. As General Schwarzkopf said, “Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy."

Library Resources
All FCPS students have access to district-purchased ebooks and audiobooks through Destiny Discover and MackinVIA. Students can read ebooks and listen to audiobooks on the MackinVIA website or download the MackinVIA app to any device, using the blue Fairfax County button, NOT the Follett sign in.
Explore the Destiny Discover library catalog to find FCPS-purchased ebooks and audiobooks. Students also have access using the desktop icon on their school-issued laptop. For more information on how to use and access ebooks and audiobooks, use these tutorials found on the Library Google Site (accessed with a student's fcpsschools account).
Finally, for even more titles, the Fairfax County Public Library offers a wide selection of ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. If you do not have a library card, sign up for one on their website and gain instant access to these digital resources and more!
Feel free to contact Ms. Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu) or Ms. Bickford (elbickford@fcps.edu) with any questions related to e-reading.
