Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood families,

We are very excited for the great week of instruction and hope that you are beginning to settle into a routine that works for your family at home.  As we look forward to next week, we want to thank our amazing teachers, instructional assistants, support staff, and office staff for everything they do each and every day for our children!  We are so incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated and amazing staff.  The PTA is collaborating with us to make sure we have an awesome virtual appreciation week!  Please look for an email from your room parent for more information.

With synchronous instruction in full swing, we are introducing specialists’ office hours daily on Monday - Thursday.  The specialists are hosting office hours through one Blackboard Collaborate Ultra link which has been sent (this week) to your child’s fcpsschools.net email address.  Please find the specialists’ office hours schedule below.  We hope you take a moment to check in with the specialists as they are eager to see your children's faces!

Although we all feel uncertainty as we consider what next year will look like, we do need to start planning for it.  As we do every year, we are asking for input you might have for your child’s class placement for next year.  Please see below for more information and a link to an optional form.

We will be hosting a virtual coffee on Wednesday, May 13th from 8 - 9am.  This will be an informal time to check in, hear updates, and spend time with adults!  We will put more information out next week on how to join.

Have a restful weekend!  We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Sincerely,

Erica Riley, Principal

Class Placements

If your child is definitely (or possibly!) returning to Stenwood next school year, we offer you the opportunity to share any comments you would like regarding class placements.

Our staff will be working on tentative class groupings this spring, with classroom assignments finalized in late August.  As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships.  Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests.  Due to the many factors we must consider in creating classroom placements, including the reassignment of some teachers to a different grade level and the hiring of new teachers, requests for a specific teacher cannot be honored.

If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete this form online by Monday, May 18th for it to be taken into consideration. Thank you.

 Moving Over the Summer?

Moving

If your family is moving over the summer or will not be attending Stenwood next year, please contact our registrar, Sonja Hunt at snhunt@fcps.edu. Thank you!

Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Tips

Your child’s live session link for Blackboard Collaborate Ultra has been sent to students’ FCPS gmail accounts and this link is only retrievable by your child’s classroom teacher.

We recommend that you:

  1. Keep this link in a safe place: “starring” it in your gmail account, copying the link over to an easily accessible word document or file on the desktop, or bookmarking it.
  2. Refresh your web browser in order to enter the session
  3. Give yourself some buffer time to attempt entry prior to the start of instruction

Save the Date!  Online Book Fair Is Coming!

Bookworm Central

Starting May 11th and running through May 27th, our book fair vendor, Bookworm Central, will be opening its virtual warehouse doors for us to have a book fair.  If your children have read everything in your house and played every game you have, now is your chance to find great books and educational games to keep your kids excited about reading, learning and exploring (and with free shipping directly to your house on orders over $20).  Teachers will also be able to create a virtual wish list and purchased books will be delivered to the school in the fall.  Look for more information coming next week! Let Mrs. Cole know what questions you may have at: nhcole@fcps.edu

*Please note, Bookworm Central is a local vendor that is intent on helping connect your children with great books.  Safety is paramount for their staff and for you.  At the warehouse, your orders are packed by team members practicing social distancing, always wearing gloves and masks, and continually disinfecting surface areas.

Food Resources

FCPS continues to expand the number of locations for food sites.  Please use this link as it will continue to be updated. If you need additional support, please contact Mrs. Hapangama or Mrs. Appleton.

How to Talk to your Child about COVID-19

It is important that you have conversations with your children about why they are out of school, and that everyone is doing their best to make sure that they are safe and healthy. As you begin to plan these conversations consider reading Talking to Children about COVID-19.

Distance Learning Packet Opt-Out

If you plan to access the learning packets online, you can choose to go paperless and opt out of receiving the mailed copies.

Positivity Project: Purpose/Connection

This week we are focusing on Purpose/Connection. You have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.

“Regardless of whatever I do, I know my purpose is to make a difference in people’s lives.”

                                                                  ~Tim Tebow

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • Do you ever wonder what your purpose is?
  • What kind of person do you want to be? What things could you be doing now to enhance the life of those around you?
  • What gifts, talents, and ideas do you have that you want to share?

We'd Love More Photos!
