Grade Level Parent Coffees

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through establishing our online learning platform for your students. There are a lot of unanswered questions. It is our goal to answer questions in a timely manner, and in a way that collects information in one place for all topics.  .  In order to help with the collection of these questions we are providing the following form below for you to submit your questions. This form allows you to ask grade level specific questions that will be answered by the grade level assistant principals.

We will be holding virtual parent coffees by grade level during the week of May 4th. Grade level administrators will be sending out specific times and dates, as well as a link to the meeting by the end of next week. This meeting will be designed to answer the submitted questions from the form above and to provide more information about how the first full week of synchronous distance learning has gone. As the county continues to roll out directions to the schools, we will continue to update the community.

The program is open to high school students attending Fairfax County Public Schools. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply by Wednesday, May 6, 2020.

Graduation & Recognitions

Hopefully you had a chance to fill out the survey Mr. Deivert put out last week for students and parents seeking input around graduation. We shared our results with the county-wide workgroup that is exploring options for recognizing our seniors. Decisions on what schools offer in terms of virtual celebrations, face to face graduation ceremonies or any other options will come from the county. I appreciate the several emails from parents willing to help do something for the SLHS Class of 2020 - for now we are awaiting direction from FCPS Leadership.

I learned in meeting yesterday that an additional survey is expected to be released later this week asking slightly different questions. This survey will be communicated from FCPS Leadership and the data will help further inform the workgroup on options moving forward.  Please make sure to provide your feedback!

South Lakes is working on a virtual Senior Awards Night where we will acknowledge as many of our seniors receiving scholarships and recognitions. We are planning for this to be similar in scope to our typical Senior Awards Night. We do know some scholarships have extended deadlines which will impact what we will be able to include. We anticipate having this ready late May / first week of June.

There are conversations going on with local businesses about other ways to show support and concern for the class of 2020. When those ideas come to fruition more will be shared.

Finally, many items for graduation were already ordered and we are finishing up a few orders for cords and such....  The collection of laptops, textbooks, uniforms and distribution of these items is all under discussion at the county level (schools, government, health department).

Communication

ENotify verses News You Choose (NYC)

I have been sending messages that contain critical information that all families have through the county eNotify system. This is typically used for emergency messages, bus transportation messaging, etc.…. This system pulls email addresses from an active students/families and you cannot opt out of it. I have learned that in a few cases these messages are going to SPAM folders. If you have not received email communication from me over the past week, pleases check your SPAM/Junk folder.

This message is being sent via News You Choose. This is a platform for non-essential messages, albeit still important, that can be opted out of.
