Hughes MS Updates

Principal's Message

Langston Hughes parents and students,

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have continued to refine our online learning platform for your students. Classes this week were quite successful, and it was wonderful to see and hear our students and teachers reconnecting!

A number of unanswered questions and concerns remain, especially with the delay in synchronous learning sessions getting underway.  Our goal is to answer your questions in a timely manner and in a way that is organized around topics of greatest concern.  In order to help with the collection of these questions we are providing the following form for you to share your thoughts:  https://forms.gle/aNhW2NxDzUi9UdZw7 . This form allows you to ask specific questions that will be answered by the administrative team

Amy Smith, assistant principal, will be holding virtual office hours on Wednesdays, from 2:30-3:30. A specific link to join those office hours will be shared early next week. This meeting will be designed to answer the most frequently submitted questions from the form above and to provide pertinent information to help students and parents more easily navigate both the synchronous and asynchronous components of distance learning. As the county continues to roll out directives to the schools, we will continue to update you via Keep in Touch messages, the LHMS website, and ongoing office hours.

Sincerely,

Aimée Monticchio

Principal

Third Quarter

As the Third quarter has ended today, May 1st, access to the gradebook in SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed until Saturday, May 9th at 6:00 am. Report cards may be viewed in SIS at that time.

Fourth Quarter

Fourth Quarter Timeline:  Fourth quarter officially begins Monday, May 4th. Teachers will provide feedback on assigned work in SIS. Students and parents will be able to see marks (Proficient, Attempted, Not Attempted) in the SIS gradebook. No grade will be calculated for the 4th quarter, but students who demonstrate proficiency on 4th quarter standards will positively influence their semester or year final grade.

Final Exams: There will be no final exam and/or culminating activity included as part of the final course grade calculation this year.

Report Cards

Report Cards: Report Cards will be mailed centrally for both third and fourth quarters.

Parents/Guardians may opt into “Go Paperless” for report cards by following the below instructions:

  • Parents/Guardians can take advantage of the paperless option, by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option. This option must be selected prior to May 12th to prevent the 3rd quarter report card from being mailed.

Last Day of School

The last day of school for all students Friday, June 12.

Summer Courses

Additional summer offerings and support through FCPS summer learning programming are being discussed and will be shared as soon as available pending developments with the state-wide closure of schools.

FCPS Virtual After-School Activities for Middle Schoolers

FCPS Middle School After-School has put together a number of virtual after-school activities to engage middle school students in the arts, music, STEM, physical fitness, cooking, games, puzzles, literature, and more – things students can do at home.

FCPS students can access these virtual after-school activities by joining the "FCPS MS After-School @ Home" Google Classroom.  The classroom code is: t673w7v.

Once your student has joined the classroom, there are a variety of activities (topics) they can choose from in the "Classwork" tab. We hope your students enjoy this site, and that it helps them actively pursue their interests during this time of social distancing. If you or your student have ideas for other activities, please email your After-School Program Specialist or use the "FCPS MS @ Home Interest Form" located on the classroom home page.

Be Safe! Be Active!  And know that we are here for you and your family!
