May is Bike Month

Bike Week May 4-8

Ideas for each day

Students won't be able to have a traditional Bike to School Day this year but we can celebrate Bike Week with the following events that can be done from home.

Monday May 4- Watch a video on the ABC Quick Check and Proper Helmet Fitting. Both videos are from the League of American Bicyclists.

Tuesday May 5- Create an outdoor bike safety course with traffic signs.  Find a safe area to ride with little or no traffic and use sidewalk chalk to engineer your own course with traffic signs.  Visit https://twitter.com/trafficgardens for ideas for your own traffic safety course.

Wednesday May 6- Practice your ride or walk to school.  Draw a map of your route and the interesting things you notice along the way.

Thursday May 7- Interview a family member or adult friend about how they learned to ride their bike and the places they went on their bike as a youth.

Friday May 8- Make a video of riding your bike and demonstrating the hand signals for right turn, left turn, and stopping.

Learning to Ride

If your child is just learning to ride here are a couple of resources:

As you are doing more walking around the neighborhood it is a great time to work on your child's ability to navigate the streets and pathways.  Children reach road readiness at different ages. Parents can use this checklist as a tool to gauge and track their child's walking skill development. This list of skills are important for your child to master.
