Stress Less Week

This week Oakton counselors will be spearheading a virtual version of our Stress Less Week!  Each day we will have a theme and corresponding recommended activity. We hope that everyone takes a moment to take a deep breath and reduce stress!

Here is our tip for Mindful Monday!

Close your eyes. Breathe in through your nose as you slowly count to five. Exhale through your mouth and count to five slowly. Repeat. This is called box breathing. A technique used to help you relax, and bring your breath back down to a normal rate. It is simple to use and can be done anywhere. Students can check out the Cougar’s Chill Spot for more mindfulness techniques.  More resources can be found in Google Classroom and our school counseling website. #OHStilLearning

Class of 2020 Yard Signs - PTSA

We hope that you all are getting through this crazy time with your senior(s) at home. You probably feel like we do, really bummed that our seniors don't get the traditional last few months of public school, where they can enjoy the camaraderie of making after-graduation decisions and dealing with the stresses of so many changes to come.

With so much uncertainty about pretty much everything, we thought we would remind you of your opportunity to celebrate your senior in a very basic, fun way. Our senior yard signs are still available and will be delivered straight to your front yard! Click the link below to purchase yours for $20. We have a limited quantity, so get yours today and don't miss out.

Parent Resources

FCPS has compiled a list of mental health resources that you may find beneficial.  Each week I will highlight a few of the opportunities available. However all of the resources can be accessed here at any time.  Mental health resources and emergency services information can be found here.

30 Minute Consultation with a FCPS Clinician

Any FCPS parent may schedule a 30-minute phone consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker, for either themselves or their middle or high school student.

This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s emotional well-being during their time away from school. Student consultations will provide support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions during this unprecedented and challenging time.  Information about community resources will also be made available. Parents can schedule a phone consultation online

This service is not intended for mental health emergencies.  If an emergency is suspected or indicated, please call 911. Additionally, students and families can access mental health support online if there is a crisis of emergency during the time of the closure.

Kognito

The Kognito Friend2Friend module is open to all high school students (currently 10th graders see this as part of their health curriculum).  Students would need to create an account at: https://fairfaxhealth.kognito.com/   and then they are able to access  multiple trainings available suitable for students and families, all at no cost, on the Kognito site.

Try a Yoga or Meditation Class

EkhartYoga is helping people cope during these stressful times. They are offering anyone 12 free yoga and meditation classes, specifically designed to help relieve stress and anxiety. No payment details are required to sign up and join classes.

Do you know an Oakton High School or FCPS employee who does ordinary things in an extraordinary way or goes beyond what is expected?  If so, then click here to share with everyone.
