Principal's Message

Dear CES Families,

Thank you again for your patience as we made the necessary security adjustments to ensure student and staff safety. The CES staff has been working all day to make significant modifications to their Blackboard accounts, so that we can resume our regular distance learning schedule. They have re-established their links on the Blackboard 24/7 page, to make sure they are all securely functioning in connection with Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. From this point forward, all live/synchronous sessions will be accessed through Blackboard 24/7. It is important that students use the Chrome browser when entering the virtual classrooms. To assist with this new procedure, we have created a user guide (HERE) and a video (HERE) to walk students and parents through the steps. When students join the live session, their SIS (Student Information System) name of record will be displayed for all participants. If anyone has concerns with this, please contact me at jtdouds@fcps.edu.

Thank you for your support and flexibility as we work to ensure the CES students have the most beneficial distance learning experience.

This week we will refocus and try to get everyone back together for learning. To assist with this we will have a CES Spirit Week. Please refer to the flyer below for each specific day's theme. If you click on the flyer it will take you to a folder where you can upload your pictures. I can't wait to see all of the CES Spirit throughout the week!

  • Beginning Monday, Partner Schools nationwide will learn about the character strength of Appreciation of Excellence and Beauty. Appreciating beauty and excellence means that you notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. This is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe; appreciation of a skill can generate admiration; and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. All these feelings (awe, admiration, and moral elevation) help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.
  • This week, our character strength example is actor John Krasinski. His new production, "Some Good News" or SGN, is a timely example of moral excellence. Each week, he gathers good news from across the internet, and takes the time to honor a person or group who are going above and beyond during this trying time. During episode 3, John surprises healthcare heroes on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA with a trip to Fenway Park where local officials and the entire Red Sox roster showered the healthcare workers in (virtual) applause. These healthcare heroes also received the honor of throwing out the first pitch of "baseball season." SGN is a wonderful example of how appreciating the excellence and beauty in our everyday lives brings joy and happiness to us all and embodies all aspects of the #OtherPeopleMatter Mindset. Watch the episode HERE.
  • So, why does appreciation of beauty and excellence matter?
  • Appreciating beauty and excellence helps an individual experience positive emotion and connect to the world around him/her. It’s an outward facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside his/her head. And, not only is the individual outwardly focused, but often deeply absorbed in a sense of awe or admiration, freeing him/her to forget anxieties and troubles. And it is associated with other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and purpose.
  • On a group level, those who appreciate beauty and excellence make our lives more enjoyable. First, it means that they’re not looking to criticize the world or its people, but instead take pleasure from their excellence. Second, it is the writers, painters, musicians, and filmmakers who help us better appreciate the world around us. It’s due to their admiration for the way the sun hits off a wave or the quiet perseverance of a cross-country runner, that we can see the world with fresh eyes.
