At FHS, Distance Learning can be a "family affair"!

Dear Family Fairfax,

We had our first family town hall meetings today.  With Blackboard going through system patches and upgrades in preparation for next week, the session link may have only worked sporadically.  For your convenience, here is a link to a recording of one of our meetings:  FHSFamilyMeeting1

You will find the most up-to-date information with regards to student fees and reimbursements/refunds, grading, teacher and school communication, and attendance.  The best part is you can fast forward and rewind as needed.  If information evolves in a different direction from what I shared, I will let our staff and families know as soon as possible.

Distance learning through a student’s individual Blackboard login is set to begin next Tuesday, and our hope is that the patches and fixes through Blackboard will be effective.   Our teachers spent time preparing and training for these individual sessions in Blackboard this week.  I shared this video with students last week:  Student Blackboard Collaborate Use. I will update you on Monday should an alternative plan be needed.

A participant asked a question about preparation for Advanced Placement (AP) courses.  Though our AP teachers will continue to provide learning opportunities aligned with the curriculum and pacing for AP, students and parents might also find the AP site useful:  AP Courses.  It provides information about AP testing and opportunities for synchronous, supplemental instruction for students.

We are working with our graduation committee on senior dues and caps and gowns.  The closure occurred at the time we normally ask for our graduate’s sizes and place our order—so please be on the lookout for information next week for seniors.

Finally, please join me in welcoming our newest assistant principal, Brian Plancich.  Mr. Plancich will serve as the subschool principal for alphabet E-Lee and supervise World Languages, Science, and our library.  He is very excited to join the Fairfax Family--Mr. Plancich Video.  His first official day is April 27th, but he is already learning about our Pride!

Speaking of our assistant principals, here is  the worldwide premiere of Fairfax High School’s Updated SR&R Presentation as it relates to distance learning—we will be placing this on the Student Den (Grab the popcorn—this is a good one!):  AP SR&R

Wishing health, happiness, and smiles,

Erin

Fairfax Pride Needs to Know:

Greetings from Student Services to Fairfax High School Families

We wanted to let you know that even given the changing dynamics of moving school to a virtual platform that we are still here to provide support for our students and families. We wanted to reach out to assure you we are learning, preparing and in daily conversations about how to support our Fairfax community.  At this time, the most reliable way to reach us is by email as blackboard is down, therefore suspending virtual office hours.  School Counselors will be available to respond via email Monday - Friday 8:30-3:30 and can also set up individual chat sessions via Google Meets.

Students Selected for All-Virginia Band, Chorus, and Orchestra

One hundred seventy-six students from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) high schools have been named to the 2020 All-Virginia Band, Chorus, and Orchestra. These groups had been scheduled to perform on Saturday, April 25, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, but the performances were cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis.  Students from throughout Virginia went through a rigorous audition process to compete for a spot in the band, chorus, or orchestra. Students selected for these ensembles were to have rehearsed with nationally recognized expert conductors to prepare for their performances.  Congratulations to our own FHS students named to these groups:

Charlie Bicknell, Chorus
Macie Chamberlin, Band
Elizabeth Choi, Orchestra
Emma Golden, Chorus
Shahab Khan, Band
Edward Park, Chorus
Abril Tello Cornejo, Chorus
Ethan Walter, Orchestra
