Glasgow Community Gazette - March 29

Glasgow Community:

On Monday, we got the sad, though not unexpected, news that schools will be closed through the end of this academic year. There were many emotions that I felt when I heard this news. The relationships we built or were still building with our students, the school-wide events that now are canceled, such as Hunger Games and Hoop It Up Night, and the work we invested so deeply in... all which we now can’t see through in the way we imagined -- it all feels unreal.

However, the work and success we have achieved together these past few years at Glasgow makes us incredibly equipped to take on this new challenge of Distance Learning. On Thursday, I met with the staff via Google Meet to outline our approach as we transition to Distance Learning. Internationally and in the Seattle area, other schools have been preparing and implementing distance learning as a result of the coronavirus for weeks now.

There are a few takeaways from their experiences, as well as research that has been done around best practices, that will guide our Distance Learning Plan at Glasgow. They include:

  • Clarity
  • Simplicity
  • Flexibility
  • Mastery focused
  • Digestibility

Teachers have begun to work collaboratively to design meaningful learning opportunities for our students, which will be shared with students and parents the week of April 13.  However, know that this transition, for both our students and staff, will require tremendous flexibility, creativity, and patience.

In order to support all of our students with access to technology, as we shift towards Distance Learning, this past week we provided 419 computers to our families. This was done with the help of many of our staff members behind the scenes, making phone calls for appointments, prepping computers and distributing computers. I am so proud to work with a staff so dedicated to our community.

More information about Glasgow’s Distance Learning Plan will be shared in the near future. In the meantime, take care of your families and loved ones and as always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Grading Update

3rd Quarter Grading Update - The School Board was briefed that no student work assigned after March 13 will be graded, at the recommendation of VDOE; however, work assigned prior to March 13 will still be accepted up until April 24 in order to be applied in the calculation of students’ third quarter grades. Additionally, it is the intention of FCPS to use maximum flexibility in assessing and evaluating student learning for the remainder of the school year.

4th Quarter Grading Update - Middle school and high school students will be assigned a “no mark” for the fourth quarter, with assignments submitted being allowed to positively influence the student’s overall grade for the year based on mastery of learning concepts, in accordance with FCPS grading policy. Only final grades will be shown on transcripts; a “no mark” will not show on a student’s final transcript.
