Principal's Message
Dear Hughes Parents, Guardians, and Students
Greetings from Langston Hughes Middle School. On behalf of all of the teachers and staff, I wish you good health and much peace in the midst of very disorienting times. We have always been and will continue to be a school that you can rely on to help you and your student thrive. Please reach out to teachers, staff or me directly if we can be of any assistance to you.
You have heard by now from the Superintendent that there is a plan in place to begin distance learning with packets that will arrive to your home next week and with online work after Spring Break. You and your student will hear more about that when the schedule is finalized. Your student can access online learning from any device in the house that is connected to WiFi.
We miss the community walking through our hallways and hills; we miss the sounds of students engaged in classes; we miss the afterschool time that allowed us to enjoy downtime together in recreational activities. There is a joy in the work that will be missed. And we look at this next iteration as one that will let us find new ways to engage children in their development as learners and young adults. There is no blueprint for this next chapter, but what I know about the Reston Community is that they are resilient, they love their schools, and they know that we go further together than going alone. I look forward to continuing to serve this community as we move forward into the days and weeks to come.
Be well; take care of yourself and your loved ones
Sincerely,
Aimée Monticchio
Principal
Updates to a few frequently asked about topics
Food & Community Resources
If you find that you need assistance please see the list of food and community resources at https://www.fcps.edu/news/coronavirus-update-food-resources . There area variety of sites throughout Reston and Herndon. The food distribution sites allow students to get a free breakfast and lunch. Adults can purchase for $2. Students must be present.
Instruction
I know many of you are anxious about grades and what distance learning expectations will be moving forward. While I don’t know those answers yet, I and other principals have been on numerous calls about access, grading, what technology software is approved, how to provide virtual teacher training, debate over live lessons verses recorded lessons and much more. I do know that county leaders are working to align the FCPS plans that were in motion prior to yesterday’s announcement from the Governor to close schools with updated guidance from VDOE. Stay tuned….
Mental Wealth Resources
If you or someone you know needs mental health support the FCPS Covid 10 site https://www.fcps.edu/news/coronavirus-update has been updated with added Mental Health resources. I have already heard of people feeling isolated. An old fashion phone call or Facetime call might go a long way to help people feel connected.
Common Questions
I paid for something that would have taken place this spring, can I get a refund?
The county is working on how to process refunds and what can be done centrally to alleviate a tedious process needing to be done at each school. Thank you for your patience as this gets worked through.
Can I get something I forgot at school?
At this point FCPS is not allowing schools to open for students to come in to retrieve items. I am hopeful that we will have a process soon that will allow for the retrieval of essential items only (glasses, laptops, chargers, medication).
Stay healthy and well 😊 We miss you!
Ms. Shook
Hey Kiddos,
I absolutely miss you and wish we could continue our journey face-to-face. Although, we are proceeding in a non-traditional way, I plan on staying in touch with you all in any way that I can. You mean so much to me and are the reason that I became an educator. I have watched you push yourselves academically, mentally, and emotionally. We have shared good times and bad times (rhetorical essay, lol) and you will be forever in my heart.
