CVHS Update 3-23

Update from the Principal

March 23, 2020

Wildcat Families,

I hope everyone is staying healthy during this extended closure.  I wanted to answer a few commonly asked questions below that I have been receiving from parents and students.  I expect further developments this week and will send another update when information is available.

1. What should students be doing for classes and learning?

  • Establish a regular learning routine and schedule for each day.
  • Students should engage in reading every day both for class activities and choice reading for pleasure.
  • Check Blackboard and/or Google Classroom regularly along with the student fcspschools email account. Teachers will use these platforms to post optional assignments and to communicate with students.
  • Exercise and engage in other wellness activities of your choice daily.
  • Check out the FCPS learning activities available at https://www.fcps.edu/node/40447

As Dr. Brabrand stated in his last communication to parents on March 19, the division is currently working hard to further develop a distance learning plan should schools remain closed beyond April 14.  Further details will be shared when ready.

2. What is happening with SOL and AP testing?

  • I expect language from the division about testing soon and will send it as soon as possible.
  • The U.S. Secretary of Education announced on March 20, 2020, students impacted by school closures due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic can bypass standardized testing for the 2019-2020 school year. In response to this announcement, additional guidance from VDOE and the State Superintendent on SOL testing is forthcoming.
  • College Board posted updates about AP exams on their website. Here is the latest from FCPS about AP testing - https://www.fcps.edu/news/fcps-shares-important-updates-ap-and-ib-students

3. What is happening with 3rd quarter grades?

  • A decision about 3rd quarter grades, or a timeline for grading, has not been finalized. I will share any updates soon.

4. Are we able to use the athletic fields and track?

  • FCPS has asked that fields be closed. This is to help reduce gatherings of people and our ability to maintain the fields is limited at this time.

5. When can I come to the school to pick-up items?

  • For now, the school remains closed. We will let you know ASAP if an opportunity to visit the school is allowed.  If your student needs their laptop, please email ndavis@fcps.edu.

6. What is happening with prom and graduation?

  • FCPS is determining what might need to happen with these events. No decisions have been made at this time.  These events are very important, and all options are being explored.

7. What if I need a transcript, or need to contact my school counselor?

I recognize that we don’t have definitive answers for many questions at this point; you can email me if you have a specific question or need.  For updates and further information such as food and mental health resources, please continue to visit the FCPS website at https://www.fcps.edu/news/coronavirus-update.

I greatly appreciate the support and patience the Wildcat community has shown school staff during this difficult time.  Having two children at home myself, I appreciate the challenges we are all facing in trying to balance home-schooling, work, and family demands.  We are fortunate to have an amazing CVHS school community, and I am grateful to be partnered with you as we work through this challenge together.  Please continue to enjoy time with your families, and I will send any new information as soon as possible.
