Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

First of all, thank you to all of you!  We miss the smiling faces and hugs.  We hope that your family is healthy and you have the support you need.  If you do not, please reach out to us so that we can help connect you to the support you are looking for.  We are in awe of how our community has come together for one another.  We have so many people offering support for our families.

Dr. Mitchell and I want to keep as much routine in place as possible, so we will continue to send our weekly Hive Happenings.  Not much is happening in the literal hive, but we know we have many hives buzzing throughout Vienna and Dunn Loring.

Yesterday, you should have received an email through eNotify with some topics that are bit more grade-level specific if you are looking for more to work on at home.

I will continue to add daily videos to my newly developed  YouTube channel where I will be posting a picture book read aloud each day, a chapter read aloud from Masterpiece by Elise Broach, and other helpful tips and tricks for parents and families.  If you have general topics you need tips on, let me know.

Stay healthy and keep reading!  Keep sending us pictures of our Stingers, we love seeing them!

FCPS 24-7 Learning Resources

Students can participate in optional, self-directed learning activities on FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard). FCPS is also sending out a mailing to any parents who still have not set up their account.

Please reach out to Meredith Mitchell (mamitchell@fcps.edu) or Jackie Krum (jekrum@fcps.edu) if you are experiencing difficulty in accessing your or your child’s account.

This website also has help for requesting assistance with your ParentVue accounts.

This video from the FCPS website provides an excellent tutorial on how to access these resources:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzly26oPcUM&feature=youtu.be

Food Resources

FCPS continues to expand the number of locations for food sites.  Please use this link as it will continue to be updated.

How to Talk to your Child about COVID-19

It is important that you have conversations with your children about why they are out of school, and that everyone is doing their best to make sure that they are safe and healthy. As you begin to plan these conversations consider reading Talking to Children about COVID-19.

ParentVue  Accounts

This weekend, you should receive an email from FCPS if you do not already have a ParentVue account.

We implore you to please sign-up for an account. A ParentVue account makes it possible for parents to access the FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) portal.

If you already have an account, you can log-in here. This is where several of the resources for students will be located in the coming weeks. If you need help setting up your account, please call. We will happily walk you through the process.

Cable Channels - Continuity of Learning

FCPS is currently creating instructional learning programs that will air on your local cable channel. Finally, a time when we suggest you let your kids watch TV!

Additional instructional videos are being developed/recorded and will be added into the lineup as they are available.  Please check this week for programs that will benefit your children at home.

Positivity Project: Love of Learning

This week, we are focusing on Love of Learning. You master new skills and topics on your own or in school.

“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.”
                                    ~Chinese Proverb

Since we haven’t had the opportunity for our daily lessons, here is more information:

WHAT DOES LOVE OF LEARNING MEAN?
Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize or a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.
People who love learning experience positive feelings in the process of acquiring skills, building on existing knowledge, or learning something completely new. Over time, individuals with this strength may develop deep and wide knowledge. Their knowledge enables them to make significant contributions to others’ understanding.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.
On a group level, love of learning is crucial. The best leaders have an insatiable desire to learn. It’s love of learning that compelled Benjamin Franklin to fly a kite and make significant advances in electricity. It’s love of learning that led Nelson Mandela to study Afrikaans (the language of his oppressors) and read a smuggled copy of Shakespeare, while locked in Robben Prison. And it’s only by learning and experimenting that we continue to grow.

Questions you might enjoy talking about:
• What topic could you spend hours and hours learning more about?
• What is a topic you know a lot about?
• How might you share your love of learning with someone else?

FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form

The survey will be collected online between March 12 and March 26.  When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the survey.

Assessment

This spring, all Stenwood parents will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This survey is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various issues related to our school.  These issues include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism.
