Oak Hill Updates - March 15, 2020

Principal's Message

Dear Oak Hill Community,

My eight-year-old son and I have been watching Little House on the Prairie together. We are also reading the series and talking about how the two differ in some respects. Many months ago, I shared with staff that if I could go back in time, I would choose to live in that time period. While the way of life was hard, families were united and worked together. Neighbors checked in on one another and found ways to help without being asked. The one room schoolhouse still amazes me, but my how the children learned. Daily life did not seem rushed and dinners were eaten together at the small table, every night. If I were to find anything positive that might come out of this horrible virus, I would hope as a community we come together to help others. I hope that our own families stay strong both in health and in togetherness. As I told my staff, our children are learning. My heart goes out to those of you who know others who have been severely impacted.

At this time, our staff has been asked to spend the next few weeks being parents and caregivers. While they are all thinking of their students and families, please do not email them. I am sure you understand that they are responding to their own family needs. Feel free to email me at hedevore@fcps.edu with any questions that I can answer in their absence from work. At this time, the school is shut down to all staff and students. If your child has something that was forgotten at school, we will let you know of another time in the future that you can pick up those items. I am sorry for any inconvenience.

We are grateful for your support and understanding during this difficult time.  The priority of FCPS remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, families, and community. I will be in touch with updates as I have them. Stay healthy, stay strong and most importantly, stay together.

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Learning Resources

  • FCPS will promote digital and online resources to FCPS students that will provide continuity of learning during this break. Our goal is for students to continue to engage in learning activities.  The first two weeks of school closure (from Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27) will not include any teacher-directed instruction. This work will not be required nor graded.
  • Additionally, FCPS cable channels with learning activities are now available. New instructional videos are currently being developed and recorded and will be added to the programming shortly. Channel 21 includes elementary school programming, Channel 25 includes middle school programming, and Channel 99 includes high school programming. This content will also be available online or click here.
  • Oak Hill has created a list of learning databases with passwords available to you here.

How Can I Help?

We have also been flooded with generous offers from employees and community members to volunteer at our food distribution sites.  Due to state training requirements for food distribution, we are encouraging those interested in helping to contact one of our community partners. These partners are in continuous support of our FCPS families and are connected with the larger effort of Fairfax County.  Their contact information is available here.
