Can you believe that it is already the beginning of March? 2020 is flying by-we are looking forward to spring days that are just around the corner!
Kindergarten and first grade students have been exploring the concept of change. Students brainstormed their own examples of change. They then discussed how some changes are caused by people and some changes are caused by nature. Naturalists from Hidden Oaks Nature Center came to present about “Spring Changes,” teaching how squirrels, deer and frogs, among other animals, prepare for spring. Students were able to observe a box turtle and toad. Ask your child to share about this experience! A huge thank you to the Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools for funding the naturalist visit to Glen Forest!

During their poetry unit, second grade students have continued to explore Jacob’s Ladder. Students discussed details and elements of the poem, leading to a deeper understanding of the theme and author’s message. During this unit, students have been making connections to the world around them and other poems and stories they have read. Students also have been creating poems in the shape of the topic. Students’ poems are hung in the 2nd grade hallways-take a peek next time you are visiting GFES!
Ms. Neubig’s Level IV fifth grade class enjoyed a visit from FCPS Superintendent, Dr. Brabrand, last week to highlight their hard work on a Document Based Questioning (DBQ) project. For this DBQ project, the driving question was, The Great Wall of China: Did the Benefits Outweigh the Cost? Students worked collaboratively in expert groups to analyze the costs and benefits for building the Great Wall of China from primary source documents. They communicated their findings by creating a Google Slide Presentation which they presented to the class. Students then took a stance on whether or not they believed the cost of building the Great Wall of China outweighed the benefits or not. The culmination of this project will be an essay utilizing and citing evidence gleaned from the documents.

Our afterschool clubs have been an exciting mixture of STEAM activities. The fourth grade Young Scholars are finishing their six weeks of STEM experiments with a group of students from Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology.

The team is comprised of 5 fourth graders and is coached by Ms.Lili Behpon (Elijah Artis’ mom). Their long-term problem is The Effective Detective, and they will be competing in Division 1.
