WAKEFIELD FOREST ES Weekly Message

Choi110cups

Ms. Buhl's first grade students used teamwork to celebrate the 110th day of school.

Dear Wakefield Forest Families,
I want to share with you some information to address any concerns that our community may have surrounding Coronavirus (COVID-19). As principal of Wakefield Forest Elementary School and a mother of children in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), I am keenly aware of the concerns that are prevalent during this time.  Please be assured that we are taking proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of everyone at Wakefield Forest. FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) are in constant communication around COVID-19. Information on talking to your child about Coronavirus can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/blog/talking-children-about-coronavirus .

Follow the Basics- Taking these simple steps will go a long way in prevention
o Wash your hands, practice good health hygiene

o Cover your cough with your inner elbow

o Stay home if you are sick

o Follow guidelines from the Health Department

Wakefield Forest steps to eliminate health concerns
o Disinfectant Wipes used throughout building

o Keeping Classrooms/Restrooms Stocked with Soap - students encouraged and given opportunities to wash hands

o Custodians taking additional steps to ensure building is wiped down

Remember
o COVID-19 knows no race, nationality or ancestry. We need to work together ensure that we stay kind to one another during this time.
o Our overall goal is to keep students and staff safe and at school

Finally, we recognize the potential for anxiety in connection with the COVID-19 situation. Reliable sources of information are the Centers for Disease Control, our local health department, and our county coronavirus website. Please know that our on-site clinicians (psychologist, social workers and counselors) are here to support you. If you have specific questions, they can be addressed by the health department at 703-267-3511.

At this time the overall recommendation is not to cancel events scheduled at schools; however, we are going to cancel our WFES STEAM event scheduled for March 26, 2020. This particular event is being canceled because it brings in vendors from across the DC region and is hands-on in nature. This is such a wonderful WFES event and we are disappointed to have to cancel it. We appreciate the amazing support of the PTA and Melissa Fabrizio for planning this event.

Positivity Project: Social Intelligence
Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place “in the moment” of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking.

Yearbook Orders
All families should have received a yearbook order form in last week’s Thursday folders. You may pay for the yearbook online or submit the order form with a check (NO cash please) to your child’s teacher no later than April 3. Please contact the office at 703-503-2300 if you need an order form.

Principal Coffee on Monday, March 23
We will be holding a principal coffee on Monday, March 23 at 9:00 am in the Library. The topic will be the work done around equity in FCPS and at WFES.  Please RSVP to Julia Ruskin at jsruskin@fcps.edu if you plan on attending.

Your Views and Opinions are Important to Us!
This spring all Wakefield Forest families will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This survey is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various issues related to our school. These issues include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism.

The survey will be collected online between March 12 and March 26. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the survey. Your opinions matter.
