RRMS Vision: Together we create opportunities for personal growth and positive impact on our dynamic world
Important Reminders: Families, we ask for your help in support of student success by reinforcing these messages with our students:
-
Be on time to class and school! Being on time is a life skill and it matters. Incentives and consequences for reducing tardies and for students with a significant number of tardies are currently in place at Rocky Run. It is important to finish the year strong and be in class ON TIME.
-
Bus Dismissal: All students who ride buses need to use the sidewalks and crosswalks to get to their buses. Please go right to your bus at dismissal and DO NOT cut through the buses.
-
Personal Technology Devices: FCPS and Rocky Run MS are not responsible for loss or damage to student personal devices (i.e. phones, tablets, earbuds, etc) and we encourage students to leave them at home. FCPS MS Personal Device policy states that ALL phones/earbuds are kept in student lockers or backpacks during the school day unless directed by a teacher to use for an instructional purpose.
"Go Paperless" Report Card Option Now Available
Starting with 3rd quarter, high school and middle school parents will now have the option to “Go Paperless” in ParentVUE and receive only online report cards. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents/guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless!". This process is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVue account and must select the paperless option.
8th Grade Writing SOL Testing
Eighth grade students at Rocky Run will be taking the Writing SOL next week on Tuesday March 10 and Wednesday, March 11. They have been working hard to prepare for this assessment. Teachers have also had conversations with students about maintaining an appropriate test environment based on state policies by keeping the following points in mind:
-
Cell phones and other electronic devices: While in the testing room, students may not have access to cell phones or other electronic devices that can transmit, receive, photograph, or record information while any students are testing. Students should leave their cell phone at home or store it in their locker upon arrival to school on both days.
-
Unauthorized materials: During testing, students should have access only to those materials permitted for the test they are taking. The school will provide the working utensils they need and have practiced with during their English 8 course. Students will need their fully charged computer, their charger, and a book to read after they finish testing. A water bottle is also acceptable to have and we encourage bottles that don’t make noise in case they fall.
-
Cheating: School staff has discussed with students the consequences of cheating. Failing to comply with the bullets above or engaging in other actions during testing could lead to cheating and potentially to receive a score of zero in the test.
Please help us having a conversation with your student about ways to maintain test security and a positive testing environment. We trust that our students are ready to perform well and to show all the skills they have learned to be great writers.
SOL Testing Calendar
Grade 8 Writing SOL
Under Virginia Law students in grade 8 are required to take the English Writing Standards of Learning (SOL) test. All students will be using their FCPSOn Devices for testing. Please ensure your student’s laptop is working and that they have their power charger. Issues should be reported to the School Technology Team located in Room 147. Computer health checks have been completed during all 8th grade English classes. All students taking the test will need to bring a fully charged laptop and power charger on these following days.
- March 10- Writing Short paper (8th Grade)
- March 11- Writing Multiple choice (8th Grade)
Grades 7 and 8 Non-Writing SOL
In addition, the Virginia Department of Education requires students in grades 3-8 across the state to take the SOL tests. The table below shows the content area and dates when students at Rocky Run will take the assessments:
- May 7- English 8
- May 11- English 7
- May 13- Science 8
- May 18-21- Math Courses

SOL Retakes - Parent Permission Form
As you may already know, the SOL passing score is 400. Students who scored between 375 and 399 are allowed to retake the test. The retake window is June 4-8, 2020. Parent permission is required for any retesting.
- 8th Grade Parents - we mailed the permission form to all 8th grade parents via US mail this week. You also can access the form here. Please read, sign and return it to your child’s Rock Time teacher no later than April 1, 2020.
- 7th Grade Parents - you will receive the form via mail in late March for the Spring test.
Academic Advising
At this time, counselors have met with all 7th and 8th grade students one-on-one to go over course selections for next year. To review your child’s selections, log into SIS ParentVUE and click “Course Requests” on the left. Please use this weekend to talk to your child about their courses. Please note that it requires a firm commitment and staffing is based on students' course selections. Contact your child counselor for any questions. Also, your child's teachers are great resources if you have any questions regarding core subjects and/or intervention courses.

Positivity Project
This week students learned about CREATIVITY as well as Cheering Other Peoples' Successes.
Creativity means you come up with new and original ways to think about and do things.
Creativity is associated with intrinsic motivation, meaning the process of creation is an end in itself. The work is not accomplished in order to receive an award. Creativity is also correlated with self-actualization, or fulfilling one’s talents and potential. Those with the strength of creativity have the urge to create, to build something new and original. The act of creation makes them happy.
Cheering other peoples' successes is an important part of the #OtherPeopleMatter mindset. Take a moment to discuss with your child:
- How does it feel when people cheer for your success?
- Why do we need this kind of appreciation individually and in our society?
- Who are you cheering for and who is cheering for you?

Air Quality: During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests for February met or exceeded all standards. The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month. Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.
If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.
We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
