Message from the Principal

Dear Sangster Families,

Monday, March 16, is designated as a student holiday. This student holiday will provide an opportunity for the FCPS staff to prepare for the possibility of distance learning in the event of a school(s) closure.  We will use this day as a staff training day and all staff will report to work.

The health and safety of our students and employees is of utmost importance.   Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is working collaboratively with the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) to prevent the spread of illness and impact upon schools.    Obviously, the coronavirus is a concern worldwide.  This is an evolving situation not isolated to Sangster and the FCPS community.   FCPS and FCHD are in constant communication around COVID-19. Information on talking to your child about Coronavirus can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/blog/talking-children-about-coronavirus.

Follow the Basics - Taking these simple steps will go a long way in prevention:

  • Wash your hands, practice good health hygiene
  • Cover your cough with your inner elbow
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Follow guidelines from the Health Department

Sangster steps to eliminate health concerns

  • Disinfectant wipes used throughout building
  • Keeping Classrooms/Restrooms Stocked with Soap - students encouraged and given opportunities to wash hands
  • Custodians taking additional steps to ensure the building is wiped down, with direction from the FCPS facilities department

Remember COVID-19 knows no race, nationality or ancestry. We need to work together to ensure that we stay kind to one another during this time.  Our overall goal is to keep students and staff safe and at school.

Finally, we recognize the potential for anxiety in connection with the COVID-19 situation. Reliable sources of information are the Centers for Disease Control, our local health department, and our county coronavirus website. Please know that our on-site clinicians (psychologist, social workers and counselors) are here to support you. If you have specific questions, they can be addressed by the health department at 703-267-3511.

Take good care and stay healthy!

Sincerely,

Lisa Reddell

Principal

Student Placements for 2020-2021

While it is still early to be thinking ahead to next year, we want to give you information about class placements for the 2020-2021 school-year ahead of time.  The staff at Sangster Elementary works hard to place students in an optimal learning situation each year.  If you have some information that would help us make those decisions, please send your comments in writing to Ms. Reddel by June 1stPlease do not list teacher names.  Rather, describe the classroom learning environment in which your child learns best.

A Friendly Reminder

Parents, please remember to send eating utensils (spoons, forks, napkins, etc.) if you are packing your student's lunch.  The school and cafeteria do not supply these items for students who bring lunch from home.

Tdap Notice for Parents of 6th Graders

Virginia Law requires that all students entering 7th grade receive a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine prior to the beginning of school. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and is usually given around the age of 11, although it can be given as early as seven years of age.

In order for your child to begin 7th grade you will need to submit a copy of your child’s immunization record showing the Tdap vaccine before the first day of school on August 25, 2020.  It is recommended that all paperwork is submitted to Sangster's office by June 12, 2020.

NOTE: After June 12th, 2020, T-dap Documentation will need to be delivered directly to Lake Braddock MS or Irving MS.

Kindergarten Orientation

There will be a Kindergarten Orientation for both parents and students at Sangster Elementary School on Wednesday, April 1st at 6PM.  We encourage parents to schedule a registration appointment prior to the Orientation.  Please call 703-644-8203 or email mthoelscher@fcps.edu for an appointment.  Please share this information with any parent of a rising Kindergarten child in your neighborhood that may not have a child currently at Sangster.

Positivity Project - Week of March 16th

This week’s character strength is Love of Learning. Those with this strength enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize or a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving. People who love learning experience positive feelings in the process of acquiring skills, building on existing knowledge, or learning something completely new. Over time, individuals with this strength may develop deep and wide knowledge. Their knowledge enables them to make significant contributions to others’ understanding.

This Upcoming Week's Character Strength:     Love of Learning

Next Week's Character Strength:     Fairness

PTA

Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings are usually held the second Thursday of every month.  Our next meeting is Thursday, April 16th at 7 p.m.  We hope that you can join us!

PTA - Important Announcement

With student safety in mind, the Sangster PTA has decided to limit after school activities and events that bring adults into the school.

We are currently canceling the Reflections celebration on March 18th and exploring other options of honoring the efforts of our students achievements.

The evening portion of the March 26th Science Fair is currently canceled. If school is in session we anticipate still exhibiting the projects at school during the day for students only. Other schools in the area are moving to an online fair and we are exploring this option also.

The organizers of Odyssey of the Mind Regional Tournament on March 14th made the decision to cancel this weekend’s tournament. Following their lead, we are canceling the 3/16, 3/19, and 3/20 Odyssey of the Mind events currently scheduled at Sangster.

The CDC is currently recommending limiting large gatherings of people in communities and our beloved carnival falls in this category. We will make the decision to cancel in the coming days.

This is a tricky, ever-changing situation and we are all doing our best to insure the safety of our students and the community. We will update you as information becomes available.
