Principal's Message
Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,
I am honored to serve as your Acting Principal and look forward to personally meeting you at the PTA meeting on March 5, 2019. This week we are celebrating Read Across America, the focus on Literacy is key to learning. The goal is for children to enjoy reading and build their confidence as readers and thinkers. As a school community of learners, we are honored to teach your children academic and social skills every day.
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go.

Clinic Considerations
Please keep your child at home if he or she is sick. It is difficult for students to concentrate or do schoolwork when they are not feeling well. Please remember that children should be fever free* without the use of fever reducing medicine (e.g., Tylenol or Advil) for 24 hours before returning to school. Students with symptoms of a stomach virus (vomiting or diarrhea) should be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Also, for safety reasons, students are not allowed to carry medications to and from school. An adult must deliver any medications with the proper medication authorization forms to the school. Please contact our school clinic at 703-237-7010 for more information.
*Note: A fever is considered 100.4(F) or 38(C).
Do you have a rising kindergartener for the 2020 – 2021 school year? If yes, you and your child are invited to join us at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School on Monday, April 13, 2020, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM for our orientation. During orientation, you and your child will have the opportunity to see the school, visit a classroom, meet our teachers and staff, ask questions and hear from Principal Eric T. Johnson. Please contact Sleepy Hollow ES at 703-237-7000 so we can get you on our attendee list for this exciting event.
How to Register Your Rising Kindergartener for the 2020 – 2021 School Year
Registration appointments are now available at Sleepy Hollow Elementary! Registering early helps the school make appropriate plans for the number of students, teachers, and classrooms that will be needed in the fall. To provide each family with the time and attention necessary for registration, walk-in appointments are discouraged. Also note that appointments will not be available on the day of Kindergarten Orientation on April 13th.
- Prior to your appointment, please complete all FCPS registration forms. Packets will be mailed to your home in March if you have been added to the Sleepy Hollow Elementary rising Kindergarten mailing list. Otherwise you can stop by the main office to pick up a packet or you can find the registration forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/kindergarten-registration.
- You will also need to bring the following items with you to the appointment:
- Child’s original birth certificate
- Enrolling parent ID
- Original deed or lease to your residence.
- If not on the deed or lease, notarized leaseholder and residency affidavits, copy of the deed or lease and a minimum of 3 official supporting documents.
- Child’s immunization records
- Completed physical form with results from a physical provided on or after August 25, 2019.
- To make a registration appointment, please contact Sleepy Hollow Elementary at 703-237-7000. For English ask for Heather Schwartz or email at hlschwartz@fcps.edu or for Spanish ask for Lourdes Jessel or email at MJessel@fcps.edu.

Baby Shark Handwashing!
What can you do to stop the spread of germs? The first line of defense is handwashing which is easy, cheap, and effective in preventing the spread of germs. When done correctly, handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
Lead by example! Remember, children imitate what you do. Remind your kids to wash their hands:
- Make it part of your routine prior to eating and after using the bathroom
- Here’s a fun video featuring staff and students at Springfield Estates Elementary School:
