Congratulations to Hayfield Gymnastics

The Varsity Gymnastics  team recently won their 3rd straight Gunston District title on February 5. On vault, Melanie Rodriguez and Virginia Keys took 1st and 2nd. On bars, Virginia Keys, Melanie Rodriguez, and Cassidy Mazyck took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. On balance beam Melanie Rodriguez and Cassidy Mazyck took 1st and 2nd. On floor Cierra Munns, Cassidy Mazyck, and Melanie Rodriguez took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And in the all-around competition, the Hawks swept the podium once again with Melanie taking 1st, Virginia taking 2nd, and Cassidy taking 3rd.

The team then moved on to the Region 6C competition where they were runners-up, narrowly missing 1st place by .25!!

However, sophomore Melanie Rodriguez took first on the vault with a score of 9.75 and junior Virginia Keys took 4th on vault with a score of 9.425. Melanie also placed 2nd on balance beam with a score of 9.525. Melanie Rodriguez then went on to place 3rd in the all-around with a score of 37.625.

Both Melanie Rodriguez and Virginia Keys then attended the state meet at Patriot High School on Saturday, February 22. Virginia had the 5th highest score of the day on vault with a season high score of 9.6. Melanie took 6th in the all-around, and 5th on bars and vault. Be sure to congratulate them when you see them in the halls!

Science Fair Award Winners

On Saturday, February 2nd, the Hayfield Science Department hosted its annual Science Fair where science honor students had the opportunity to showcase their independent research projects to category judges. 

This year 165 projects representing the work of over 200 students were judged on their research, data analysis and results.  Awards were presented to the students on Tuesday, February 4th and the full list of awards can be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/2020SFawards.

This year we awarded two grand prize awards - one grand prize award to a team project of Emma Wood, Mika Sliteris and Elle Rasmussen earned grand prize for their Environmental project titled, “The effect of Development on Silt Deposition." - and one grand prize award to an individual project by Maryam Khan for her Bioinformatics project titled, “The Application of Bioinformatics to Assess the Effect of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms on Protein Expression and Molecular Structure in Endometriosis.”

They and 20 other projects will advance on to the regional competition March 20-22nd at Robinson High School where they will compete against projects from all schools in Fairfax County for the chance to advance on to State and International Competitions.

We are extremely proud of all participants and wish our regional competitors the best of luck in March.

 


2020 Disney Dreamers Academy Essay Contest Winner

Congratulations to Amari Mealy who was was selected as an official winner of the 2020 Disney Dreamers Academy Essay Contest! The prize package includes an invitation to attend Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey
and ESSENCE® magazine to attend inspirational talks and workshops. The Academy will be held at the Walt Disney World® Resort near Orlando, Florida over March 12-15, 2020.

 


No Place for Hate Committee Recognition

Thanks to Patrick Cloud (HS) and Mia Branson (MS) who were leaders on the No Place For Hate Committee, they planned and executed our Friendly February event wonderfully! They are so strongly committed to making Hayfield a place where there is no place for hate.

 


Latin Certamen Awards

Congratulations to the Hayfield Latin Certamen (Competition) teams who competed at Thomas Jefferson High School on February 29th. The advanced team earned third in the open category, the intermediate team earned second in the competitive category (!!), and the novice team received eight place in open. Great job, Hawks!
