Renovation Update

This week I hope to send an update on any plans to move this spring. Just in time for the beautiful weather this week we received permission to start using the cafeteria courtyard!  Students will now have that available to them as the weather continues to improve.  We do have benches available to the students and USB charging stations.  We have our tables ordered and hope to get those in the coming weeks.

Please visit our website for more information on the scope of the renovation and the renderings of what the building will look like when completed.

General Information

Health and Wellness

FCPS is continuing to monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.  We are following all guidance sent by Dr. Brabrand to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all.  All updates regarding the coronavirus can be found here on the FCPS website.

Applications Wanted for Student Representative to the School Board for 2020-21 School Year, Deadline Is March 24

Each year, FCPS students can apply for the position of the student representative to the School Board. The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity, representing the interests of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools.

Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply, and they do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC). Applications are due by March 24.

The application and more information are available online

Paperless Report Card Option

Starting with 3rd quarter, high school and middle school parents will now have the option to “Go Paperless” in ParentVUE and receive only online report cards. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents/guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless!". This process is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVue account and must select the paperless option.

Junior Parent Night - March 19, 6:00pm

School counselors will be hosting Junior Parent Night on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 6:00-7:30pm. Parents will gain insight into the college search process and application process.

The format is a large group setting in the cafeteria and auditorium divided by student last name. Students with the last names A - Lam will be in the cafeteria while students with the last names Lan - Z will be in the auditorium.

Cougar Commendation Nominations

It’s time for Spring Cougar Commendations. Teachers are in the process of nominating students to be recognized for their achievements in one of the five Fairfax County Portrait of a Graduate attributes. Nominated students will be recognized at a special ceremony in April. In addition, we also have Faculty Cougar Commendations to recognize OHS faculty/staff for their hard work, passion, and innovation. Parents are invited to use this nomination form to recognize a faculty/staff member for their dedication. All nominations are due by Friday, March 27. Faculty members will be recognized at the April staff meeting. It means so much to our faculty and staff to know that you notice their efforts. Please contact Margaret Moran (memoran@fcps.edu) or Sara Dornauer (sadornauer@fcps.edu) with questions.

Survey Information

School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians and school staff members who interact with the school health rooms.

FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online

This spring all Oakton High School parents will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This survey is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various issues related to our school.  These issues include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism.

The survey will be collected online between March 12 and March 26.  When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the survey.  Your opinions matter.

School Attendance is Important!

Research shows that the single most important factor contributing to student achievement is school attendance. Absent students miss out on discussion, raised questions, explanations and much more.

So, what can you do to help?

  • Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
  • Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
  • Make sure your student eats healthy foods and gets enough sleep and exercise.
  • Don't accept excuses from your child why they "must" miss or be late for school.
  • Discuss what happened at school each day.
  • Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.

We offer programs, services, and resources that engage families, schools and the community in support of student success.

Find out more here about programs and supports offered in FCPS to build stronger family-school partnerships and better engage families.
