Glasgow Community Gazette - February 23

k

Glasgow Community:

This past week, there were a number of events that celebrated our Panther Principles of Kindness, Commitment and Safety. On Tuesday and Friday, we celebrated students who are ‘committed’ to their academics and earned All A Honor Roll.

On Tuesday night, we celebrated kindness when Glasgow students, in partnership with the VA STAR hosted their “Bridging the Gap Night,” where students presented refurbished laptop computers to other classmates and their families who are in need of technology at home. Special thanks to John Floyd and Marc Perella for their leadership.

Recently in Panther Time, our students re-committed to safety by partaking in a mid-year Students Rights & Responsibilities refresher lesson and had a lesson on Valentine’s Day about the little ways we can be kind to each other by showing love.

This week marks the beginning of the District Band, Chorus and Orchestra Assessment season. All of our ensembles will be performing in front of professional adjudicators at various FCPS locations during the month of March. For performing ensembles, these are the most important performances of the school year. To prepare for these assessments, ensembles will host “Pre-Assessment Concerts” in the upcoming weeks. The Band Pre-Assessment is this Tuesday, February 25, the Orchestra Pre-Assessment concerts are on March 4 and 5 and the Chorus Pre-Assessment concert is on March 11. All concerts begin at 7:00pm at Justice High School. These concerts are free and open to the public.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Getting Ready for High School

2020-21 Course Registration for Rising 9th Graders - Glasgow Student Services recently met with all 8th graders to register them for next year's courses! After meeting with their counselor, 8th graders should have brought home the course selection sheet for your review.

Parents are now able to view their student’s course selections in ParentVUE. You may help your student through this process by using the “How To” guide. In order to make changes to course requests, parents of rising 9th graders will need to contact the student services team at Justice HS no later than March 1.

Civics Lobby Day on March 5 & 6 – Volunteers Needed! - On March 5 and 6, 8th grade students will be doing a presentation of learning about state and local government. They will identify problems in their school, state or local communities and create an advocacy plan in order to lobby a legislator or decision maker about the issue. To give students an authentic audience for this task we are asking community members to volunteer to visit Glasgow for one hour and interact with students. In addition to Glasgow community members, we’d also love to have elected officials volunteer, as well as anyone with a direct connection to public service. Thank you in advance for supporting our students! To sign-up, visit this link. Email Tina Takach at cptakach@fcps.edu with any questions!
