Principal's Letter

Dear Waynewood Owls,

Last night we had the Waynewood Spelling Bee! I want to congratulate everyone who participated in the event, it is not easy to stand up in front of a large group of people and spell difficult words. A special congratulations to our winners and runners-up:

Senior Winner: Shaan Nagda

Senior Runner Up: Katherine Watters

Junior Winner: Jackson Ivey

Junior Runner-Up: Joaquin Gutierrez

Shaan Nagda will represent Waynewood at the Regional Bee. We know he will make us proud! We want to thank Holly Watters and Tara Baird Hicks for organizing this fantastic event again this year.

Last week we happily welcomed an Owl back to the nest. Mark Tierney returned to his role of School Based Technology Specialist and we are thrilled to have him back on our staff!

Although next school year seems far away, we are already starting to prepare to welcome the next class of rising kindergarteners to Waynewood. Our kindergarten orientation is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 2020 from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm. Please let any neighbors who have rising kindergarteners know that this is a wonderful way to learn more about our school.  There will be a brief presentation, question and answer session, and a tour of our school.

A few weeks ago, a survey was sent regarding a Science and Invention Share event. There was enough interest that we scheduled the event for Monday, March 16, 2020 from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm in the cafeteria. All students are invited to prepare a presentation or share a project or invention. To register for the Science and Invention Share, please visit https://tinyurl.com/WWESShare-2020

If you are looking for something exciting to do tonight, consider supporting the West Potomac Basketball Program! The Gunston District Championship for both the girls and boys teams is tonight! The girls play at 5:45pm and the boys play at 7:30 pm.   Both teams are playing at home against T.C. Williams and I know they would love to hear you cheering for them! The cost is $5 per child and $7 per adult.

Have a wonderful weekend! Go Wolverines!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alice Berenbaum, Assistant Principal

Attendance Reminders

Regular school attendance is key to school success! Did you know that regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level? Or that students who attend school 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time? Attendance counts, from the very first day of kindergarten! We’d like to remind all parents about just how important attendance is. Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year – just two days per month) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable. Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available. If your child is going to be late or absent for the entire day, you must let the school know. You can call the Waynewood Attendance Line (703-704-7777) anytime day or night and leave a message or send an email. Alternatively, you can call the Front Office before 9:15 a.m. in the morning to report the absence to one of our office staff. If you do not call the school you will receive an automated phone call and an e-mail from the County reporting the absence. Absences are considered unexcused until the absence or tardiness is explained. Parents have 48 hours to report a reason for the absence before the unexcused designation becomes part of the permanent record. Per FCPS policy, after five unexcused absences, you will be contacted by an administrator to discuss a plan to improve attendance. After 10, you will be required to attend an attendance conference with an administrator.
