WrestlingWrestling Crowd

Winter Sports Highlights

After a strong Regional Tournament finish on February 15th the Woodson Wrestling team had 6 wrestlers finish in the top 4 of their weight class to qualify for the Virginia State Tournament. Qualifiers were Joey Martin, Anthony Martin, Ryan Yoder, Jay Swallow, Tommy Dunn, and Philip Clanor.

On Saturday, February 22, with the crowd support of so many from the Woodson community, Senior Anthony Martin won the 132 lb Virginia 6A State Championship making him Woodson's first state wrestling champion since 1994!  Senior Joey Martin placed 5th in the State in the 126 lb weight class.  Congratulations to all of the WTW Wrestlers on a great season!

WTW Varsity Girls Basketball (17-6) lost to South County in overtime, 48-46, at home in the Patriot District semifinals.  Maggie McGuire continued her tear and led the Cavs with 18 points, 12 coming in the 4th quarter and overtime.  Eunice Yoon returned to play with 13.  Abby Pesansky added 6 with 9 rebounds.  Anna Wiggins scored 4 with 7 assists and only one turnover. Sarah Wilson added 3, with 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocked shots.  Levi Weinberger scored 2.  The girls fought hard but South County’s basket with 4.8 seconds left in overtime broke a 46-46 tie and left WTW little time to respond. On a separate but very special note, congratulations to Erik Cassily on being named Patriot District Coach of the Year along with WTW players earning District honors, First Team Maggie Maguire, Second Team Abby Pesansky and Sarah Wilson, Honorable Mention Eunice Yoon and Anna Wiggins and All Defense Team Sarah Wilson.

The Cavs move on to the Occoquan Regionals this week to face Annandale at home at 7 PM on Monday.  Should they win, the Cavs will face the winner of Edison and Robinson on Tuesday at 7 PM (location to be determined).  Let’s pack the stands and cheer on the girls as they make their final run of the season!

Woodson Rifle Team athletes continue to impress. USA shooting sent out their first round of invitations for Junior Olympics and a number of Woodson Rifle team members were among those who received invites on Wednesday evening.  Competing against thousands of junior athletes across the nation, seven Woodson Rifle Team members were invited to participate in the Junior Olympics this coming April.  Juniors, Meredith Ivey and Victoria Kopelen; as well as sophomore, Rose McClelland were invited to compete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs over Spring Break in Precision Air.  Meredith was invited to compete in smallbore over the week, as well.  The Men's competition is the following week and Senior, Shawn Chen; junior, Nate Wehrlen; and sophomores, Justin Mangis and Joe Stefanski were invited out to Colorado to compete in Precision Air.  Knowing that there are only 150 slots open for each competition we recognize what a huge accomplishment this was for our athletes and the team. Way to go Woodson Rifle! And good luck as you continue to train for the Junior Olympics!
