Dear Family Fairfax,
As our week ends, we have heard the rumblings of snow in Virginia Beach and the Carolinas. At this point, if there was such a thing as a snow dance, people would be performing it in our hallways, on our sidewalk, out in our community. Winter isn’t quite over, yet, though!

If you have a moment, please join me in congratulating, again, Mike Replogle, for his service to our students at both FHS and other high schools through our Academy. Let him be an example to us all, and speaking of shining examples, please join our Dance students this Sunday at 6pm for their benefit concert for MS!
This is a busy weekend, with wrestling, swim and gymnastics all participating in either regionals or State, and both of our basketball teams starting Occoquan Regional play next week. Also next week, we will be celebrating the culture and community we have at Fairfax with a spirit week and a final Cultural Celebration next Friday night at 7PM. Please encourage your student to attend and bring the family to enjoy an evening where much of the very best of what makes us so unique is on display!
We have fielded a few questions about progress reports, and how often progress is or can be communicated to parents by our teachers. A few years ago, FCPS generated a progress report that was sent automatically every, single week. That feature changed last year, becoming a little more sophisticated than its first iteration. What is most important is that parents need to log into SIS ParentVUE one time, to set up the weekly progress report feature. You can even choose to set your parameters so that you receive reports as much or as little as you would like: Weekly Progress Report Parent Quick Reference Guide
All parents/guardians of Middle School and High School students who have registered for a SIS ParentVUE Account and have a primary email address recorded in SIS ParentVUE can receive Weekly Progress Reports via email. This report provides a summary of your student(s) grades for the current quarter. To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE Account and first verify that you have a primary email address within the system. It is listed under the “My Account” tab. If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports and click on update account. Once confirmed, parents/guardians are able to activate and select their preferences for receiving these reports within the SIS ParentVUE “My Account” tab.
Weekly progress reports for all of your Middle and High School students will be included in one email. FCPS Elementary Schools do not use the SIS grade book and therefore are not included in these reports.
For questions about a specific progress report or grade you can login into your SIS ParentVUE Account to find detailed grade book information. Additionally, your student’s teacher is always the best resource to answer any grade book questions that you may have.

The project promotes that by sharing art, knowledge and ideas across cultural lines, we can create a more ethical and colorful world, so we plan to color our school with these beautiful bracelets.

My Spanish 2 class is participating in The Pulsera Project which is a nonprofit organization that began in 2009 when a group pf people travelling in Central America discovered some artists who make these beautiful handwoven pulseras (bracelets).
There is really no market for these artists to sell them in their countries, so these folks decided to take the pulseras back to the states to sell them on behalf of the artists. Since then, students and teachers from across the United States have been selling these works of art, helping to grow this project into what it is today.
Nearly 200 artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala have employment because of this organization. Not only that, the proceeds from these sales also help to fund scholarships, shelter support and healthcare to name a few.
I was looking to do some type of cultural project and ‘stumbled’ onto this while looking at Pinterest. I thought it would be a great way for my students to learn a little about the people of Nicaragua and Guatemala while also helping others. They understand that these artists have spent countless hours making these bracelets and that we are not giving them a handout, but helping to sell their goods.
Our sale officially begins on Tuesday, February 18 and runs through March 2nd.
Celebrate the diversity of our students as you and your family immerse yourselves in the extraordinary cultures of our students here at Fairfax High School.
This year’s “Cultural Celebration” event will be held on Friday, February 28th at 7pm in the auditorium at Fairfax High School.
This year’s student performances will include traditional Korean drums (Nanta & Samulnori), the Korean fan dance, Vietnamese traditional hat dance, Chinese dragon dance, Indian dances, Latin dances, K-Pop dance & Mongolian horse head fiddle, along various other dynamic student performances. The show will culminate with an international fashion show.
In addition, refreshments will be available for sale starting at 6:30pm – and all proceeds will benefit various FHS student clubs and organizations connected to the Cultural Celebration.
Ticket are $3 and will be sold at the door. Children 5-years-old and under are free of charge.
FCPS and City of Fairfax Schools employees will receive one free ticket with their badge.
It will be a fun & entertaining evening for the WHOLE family.
