Video of the Week

Kilmer Center staff with a student who is using language for the first time.

The life-changing moment featured in this Kilmer Center video brilliantly illustrates an outcome of heart work. Kilmer Center Assistant Principal Hoang Nguyen tweeted, "We heard this kiddo using language for the first time. Epic moment. Always focus on abilities. POG [Portrait of a Graduate] attribute."

Thanks to Kathleen Zekoski (above, left), a speech language pathologist, and Drea Vechery, a teacher (above, right), for doing what they do and for reminding us of our collective "Why." Watch the video.

#OurFCPS Faces: Tya Echols

Hughes MS English Teacher Tya Echols

Originally from Los Angeles, Tya Echols says she is “smitten” by the East Coast and Fairfax County Public Schools. Tya has been teaching for 21 years and at FCPS for three years. She teaches seventh grade English at Hughes MS. She also serves on the Cultural Proficiency School Site Committee.

Tya shared that she is honored to be a part of FCPS. She adds, “What I like most about my job is that I learn something new each day, and I end the day knowing that the work I do is impactful. Additionally, I like the group of teachers that make up our CLT [Collaborative Learning Team]. Our seventh grade English CLT truly functions as it should. We all play a vital role in the success of the team. We value one another’s ideas and expertise; it is a safe space for us to work and share ideas and seek answers when needed.”

Principal Aimee Monticchio says, “Ms. Echols’ students are never passive! She plans bell-to-bell activities and holds high expectations for engagement from every child. She invites her students into the work by knowing them personally and academically. Together she and her students enjoy and celebrate their hard work.”

When asked about her motivation for teaching, Tya responds, “My reason ‘why’ is simply that I teach for the sheer passion and joy of impacting lives. I teach for that 'Aha moment' that I catch in my students' eyes, that moment of reflection, and that moment when a student becomes teacher–authors of their own learning. As a teacher, I never stop learning. It is this internal desire to learn that continues to drive me to teach as well. My mantra is ‘The work is hard, but the work is good.’"

When she’s not impacting students’ lives, Tya enjoys cycling (indoors and outdoors), playing basketball, and running. She adds, “Outside of the physical activities, listening to audible books is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time.”

Tya, FCPS is honored to have you on our team!
