Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week
at CRS!

randomactsofkindness

Visit the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation for ideas about bringing kindness home, to school and throughout the workplace.

Some of our favorites ways to spread kindness include:

  • Hand out “caught being kind” cards
  • Record kind acts or assign a student to be the kindness recorder
  • Write gratitude cards to each other
  • Wrinkled Heart Lesson
  • Do a kind act for another class- offer to clean, write them a card etc.
  • Create a Kindness Challenge or Checklist for students to complete

If you want to discuss any ideas or check out a book about kindness, stop by our school counselors' offices (Tammy Berick & Christine Meehan) . Have a great week!

Thank You for Helping Rise Against Hunger

rise

On Saturday, February 8, families from the Langley Pyramid schools made meals to feed children in schools and orphanages worldwide. A special thank you to all our students who took on additional chores or set aside part of their allowance as part of the “Learn to Earn” initiative to earn money to donate to Churchill’s Rise Against Hunger coin drive. Our students contributed an amazing $2,348! A big thank you to the Churchill Road community for their online contributions to this worthwhile effort.

Special thanks to Jordan Craig-Kuhn, Megan Brown and Molly Gift, our Student Council teacher sponsors. Under their guidance, the SCA coordinated the collections at school and participated in the meal-making on Saturday.

Spotlight on Churchill:  Hannah Tappan,
Third Grade Teacher

tappan graduation

Ms. Tappan and family at her graduation from VCU.

Who knew that when Churchill Road needed a third grade teacher mid-year last year we would find the perfect fit right in our own backyard? Third grade teacher Hannah Tappan grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, moving to McLean her junior year of high school, where she went on to graduate from Langley HS. It wasn’t until she transferred to Langley and was placed into a peer helping class by her advisor, that she developed a love of teaching. In this role, Ms. Tappan worked with a wide variety of students. Creating relationships with the kids and getting to know the teachers instilled in her a love for teaching. After a couple of weeks, she knew that she wanted to become a teacher. From Langley, she went on to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for both her undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education.

Although Ms. Tappan has only been at Churchill Road for a little over a year, she has become an integral part of the third grade team. Her teammates have become some of her closest friends and she can not say enough about how welcoming and wonderful the Churchill Road staff, parents and students have been. Ms. Tappan considers herself extremely lucky to have received the job offer mid-year after just graduating with her Master’s.

Before working at Churchill, Ms. Tappan held a variety of jobs. She babysat, worked in restaurants, and even helped with some lobbying on the hill. She says that her most interesting job was one that she had in high school, where she was a helper for an elderly woman who lived nearby. Although Ms. Tappan was the helper, her charge taught her many life lessons and acted as a mentor.

As the oldest of four kids, Ms. Tappan has a great relationship with her mom and siblings. Living closeby, she still spends lots of time with her younger brother Sam, who is 23 and two younger sisters Molly, 21 and Ellie who is 20. She also devotes a lot of energy to Rosie, her very cute dachshund mix. When not at work, Ms. Tappan can be found going to the movies, watching VCU basketball or crafting. Whether it is trying out new painting mediums, wood burning, or making things, she is always willing to try a new project!

We are thrilled that Ms. Tappan landed at Langley HS, developing her love of teaching, then ended up at Churchill Road. We hope that she will share her energy and enthusiasm with our students for many years to come.

Wellness:  Making Every Day Special

100thday

Some of our kindergartners and their teachers channel their older selves and dress as 100 year-olds on the 100th day of school.

In the past few weeks you may have celebrated Chinese New Year, the 100th Day of School, Valentine's Day, and President’s Day. Holidays tend to bring a sense of joy just by being a break from the normal routine, but there are many ways we can easily make any day feel special. One option is to begin your day by setting a simple positive intention. An intention provides a map for your day and can be a word—gratitude, energy, patience—or a short statement: “I intend to successfully complete my project.” An intention is a seed for the day and it is amazing how setting an intention can frame the experience of your day and increase your awareness of opportunities for you to move in the direction you desire. In addition to setting an intention, other possibilities for making an ordinary day special include deciding to serve breakfast fare for dinner or dining by candlelight. You can try a different route for your commute, read a book from a genre you do not usually choose, or have a dance party in your living room. You can always check the internet for a list of holidays to celebrate; today is Best Friends Day, tomorrow is Love Your Pet Day, and February 25th is International Pancake Day. Of course, February 29th is Leap Year Day, an extra day in our 2020 and a great time to plan something fun with family and friends. Enjoy celebrating the joys of each day!

As outlined by FCPS Regulation 1367.2, school principals shall offer options to nonprofit organizations that want to make their materials available to students and parents.
