Starting Monday, we'll begin learning about enthusiasm -- which is the ability to bring excitement to different situations. for a 1-page overview, please click here.
Those who demonstrate enthusiasm bring energy and intensity to their work -- which often leads to the people around them also being energized as engaged. People who use their enthusiasm are happy, but this strength goes beyond happiness or pleasure. It is an activated positive energy, and associated with self-realization and autonomy. Enthusiasm is a strength that has strong connotations with both physical and mental vitality and well-being -- and can be fortified through diet, exercise, mindset, and social connection.

In an effort to make our daily morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up more efficient and safe, we modified the traffic pattern and procedures.

Parking for Student Pick-Up and Drop-Off in Front of the School (Door 1) - Unchanged
· If you plan to park and walk your child(ren) to the front of the building, enter the parking lot, take an immediate lefthand turn, and park at the top of the parking lot following the path identified by blue arrows on the attached map.
· For everyone’s safety, all children must be escorted on the sidewalk to and from the front of the building following the blue path indicated on the map.
· Our goal for this new traffic pattern is to alleviate the bottle neck entering the parking lot and allow parents to enter without driving the wrong way into the parking lot.
Kiss N Ride Pick-Up and Drop-Off - New
· Cars will enter the parking lot and turn left down the second row following the path highlighed by the yellow arrows on the attached map.
· Cars will then turn right down the next lane of of the parking lot and finally left to the loading and unloading zone in front of the school. The attached map indicates the traffic pattern with yellow arrows.
· In the morning, parents will pull into the loading and unloading zone and students must be ready to exit the cars. When all cars are stopped in front of the school, students will quickly and safely exit the car.
Reminders:
· Parents may drop students off at school via the Kiss ‘N Ride line off Arrowhead Road after 8:55 AM. Do not allow students to leave your car prior to 8:55 AM
· Pick up will begin at 4:00 PM and students will be called by Kiss ‘N Ride number. If you do not have a Kiss ‘N Ride number, you will be required to park and walk to the front of the building to pick up your child(ren).
· Only students who live outside of our school’s boundaries may acquire a vehicle number for Kiss ‘N Ride.
· The parking lot off Leland Road in front of the main door is only open to buses during arrival and dismissal or when buses are loading and unloading.
· For everyone’s safety, obey traffic laws and DO NOT drive the wrong way down the road into the parking lot off Arrowhead Road.
· If possible, riding the bus is always the best option!

5th Graders Hosted a Molecular Invention Museum in the Patterson Chem Lab!
This was an interesting extension to their Ocean Chemistry lesson that got the kids extremely excited. 5th grade chemists had to work collaboratively to create an original molecule using the periodic table and everything they’ve learned about atoms, molecules, elements and compounds. As part of this project, students were asked to name, explain its purpose, create a map of their molecule with element labels and prepare an exhibit to teach others about what they created. It was a fun event that left the students hungry for more chemistry!

6th Graders Sounded Off in a Socratic Smackdown!
Students have been learning about hurricanes and participated in a Socratic Smackdown, a seminar in which students are on teams and hold each other accountable for participation and providing evidence from primary sources for their answers. This is also a structure that helps students learn how to agree and disagree with each other respectfully

We would like to invite parents and community members to participate by joining us as a featured guest at the Powell Career Fair. Career Fair will be held on Friday, March 27, 2020 from 12:45 to 3:15 p.m. Participants will be stationed at tables throughout the gym. Students in grades 3-6 will be attending the fair and visiting the tables. This provides an excellent opportunity to share your role in the working world with our students. Visual aids (posters, equipment, uniforms, etc.) and hands-on materials are extremely helpful when working with elementary school aged children.
If you, or someone you know, would like to participate in Colin Powell’s Career Fair 2020, please complete the form that went home in Tuesday Folders and return it to the School Counseling Office no later than March 13th.
