FCPS Region 4 Outstanding Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Ms. Toshieba Ragland for being named the FCPS Region 4 Outstanding Teacher of the Year! As a Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) teacher here at Lake Braddock, Ms. Ragland excellence in teaching and dedication to her students, fellow faculty and Lake Braddock community make her an inspiration to us all. We look forward to cheering on Toshieba as she advances as a FCPS Outstanding Teacher of the Year finalist.

Minority Parents for Excellence in Education (MPEE)
In partnership with the LBSS Minority Parents for Excellence in Education (MPEE) we will celebrate Black History Month throughout the month of February. Please come out to the 6th Annual Scholarship Fundraising Concert, Soulful Inspiration on Saturday, Feb. 29th, 2-5 p.m. in the LBSS Little Theater. See flyer below for more information.

ANGP MULCH SALE FUNDRAISER PTSA is selling 3-cubic foot bags of JK’s double-shredded hardwood mulch for $4.80 per bag, with all proceeds supporting ANGP. Orders must be placed by March 9th. If you order 15 bags or more, free delivery is included on March 21st & 22nd. Otherwise, mulch should be picked up in LBSS parking lot. To help keep schools safe, students, staff members, families, and members of the community are urged to use the Fairfax County Public Schools tip line (https://www.fcps.edu/tipline) to report any school safety issues or concerns.

The text number has changed to 888-777; keyword TIP FCPS.

The tip line allows users to submit tips in three ways:
1.    Telephone: 571-423-2020 (leave voice mail, same number)
2.    Text: 888-777 keyword; TIP FCPS (new text number and keyword) 
3.    Online: information and instructions on how to report.

All information is treated as anonymous and confidential.

Reflections "Look Within" Contest Winners
The theme for the 2019-2020 Reflections contest was “Look Within.” This theme challenged students to look within themselves to determine what drives them, what inspires them, and what they are most passionate about. Congratulations to the Lake Braddock students who are Northern Virginia District PTA winners of the Outstanding Interpretation Award:

  • Juliet Auten, 8th Grade, Outstanding Interpretation in Music Composition, “Nostalgia”
  • Charles Nguyen, 9th Grade, Outstanding Interpretation in Photography, “Synapse”

Juliet’s and Charles’ entries will advance to the Virginia State PTA/PTSA level.

 

Gold Level Certified School-Based Enterprises
Once again, Burger Pit and Spirit Box are recertified as Gold Level Certified School Based Enterprises. This is the result of students working all levels of both of those businesses and submitting a written project based on pricing, financial analysis and product/service management. Congratulations to our students (listed below) who have qualified for competition at International Career Development Conference in Nashville, TN in April.

Coding with Kids

Registration for the Winter Amazon Coding with Kids classes is now open!

Classes will be offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school.

LBSS Athletics Information
All spring athletic team try-outs will be held Monday, February 24, 2020.

Required try-out forms are available on LakeBraddockBruins.com under the “Forms” tab. All forms must be submitted to the athletic trainer or the Activities Office to obtain a try-out card. Students who tried out for a Fall or Winter team do not need to re-submit forms but will need a try-out card and Emergency Care Form for the spring coach.

Try-out cards were distributed this week on February 19th, 20th and 21st during all high school lunches and after school in the Athletic Training Office.

Families with student athletics should sign up for News You Choose, selecting athletics and activities. @LBathletic is the Twitter feed and a number of teams use Twitter extensively to blast info: https://www.lakebraddockbruins.com/page/5389

Looking ahead to Fall 2020: Tryouts for all athletic teams will begin August 3, 2020.

 

High School Students Invited to Fairfax County 2020 Teen Job Fairs
Fairfax County high school students looking for their first part-time job, summer and seasonal job opportunities, or who want more information about potential career pathways are invited to attend one of six upcoming teen job fairs and resume building workshops in Fairfax County. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand to offer a range of opportunities including part-time employment, internships, and volunteer work for prospective students.

Volunteer opportunities and resume building workshops will be available for younger students. Free booth spaces are provided to local businesses. The first two job fairs will be held on Saturday, March 7, at Woodson High School from 10 a.m. to noon, and at South County High School from 2 to 4 p.m.

College Partnership is accepting applications now through March 18.   
The goals of College Partnership are to increase the academic achievement of underachieving students and to increase the number of students, particularly first generation and minority students, who enroll and succeed in college. The CPP creates opportunities for students to successfully navigate the home, school, and college continuum. 

Members attend monthly meetings and Lake Braddock and have access to a robust county program which includes parent support and college visits.

Adult and High School Student Volunteers Need for Mulch Sale
The PTSA needs lots of adult and student volunteers to help on March 21st and 22nd.   Underclassmen can earn service hours.  Seniors earn VIP early access to ANGP store, to have first choice on specialty items like blenders, wireless speakers, dorm items and more. Students can sign up with their friends and work as a team delivering mulch.  It is a lot of fun and we have free food and beverages for all volunteers.
