#OurFCPS Faces: Kim Kelly

Kim Kelly, FCPS bus driver

Bus drivers are often unsung heroes. So, we are very excited to tell you about the heroic actions of an FCPS bus driver that occurred on February 13.

According to Dawn Cochran, a dispatcher with Area 3 Transportation, Kim Kelly had just finished her Bull Run ES route and was heading to her shuttle when she saw a small boy walking by himself on Route 29 in Centreville.

She explains, “I saw the little boy, Jason, walking down the blacktop sidewalk all by himself. I looked and didn't see any adults with him. [...] It was a bad day, kind of raining, and I thought well I'm going to have to stop and check this out, because he's too little to be out here by himself in all this rush hour traffic.” Kim pulled over to talk to him. He told her he was on his way to daycare (at a non-FCPS facility) and pointed across the huge intersection. She convinced him to get on the bus and told him they would figure a way to get him to safety.

After speaking with dispatch, Kim dropped Jason off at his daycare facility. “In the meantime," Kim adds, "He and I just chit-chatted a little bit. He was a nice little boy and very smart. I was very happy and felt relieved that I was able to help him get to a safe place and extremely happy that I was in the right place at the right time to help this little boy.”

Kim started working at FCPS 20 years ago as an instructional assistant. Fourteen years ago, she became a bus driver. Her supervisor, Tina Hunt, boasts, “Kim always has a positive attitude and is always willing to lend a hand. She is extremely observant and vigilant when it comes to students’ safety–whether on the school bus or outside of the school bus.”

During her free time, Kim enjoys gardening, family gatherings, and relaxing at her river house nearly every weekend.

Thank you, Kim, for going above and beyond for the safety of all children!
