WTW Varsity Girls Basketball (17-5, 7-3 Patriot District) defeated Fairfax, 33-27, to win its first regular season District championship since 2004!!  The Cavs overwhelmed the Lady Rebels in the second half, holding them to seven total points (none in the third quarter) to rally from a 20-12 halftime deficit.  Three Cavs scored in double figures with Allie Maahs continuing her lights-out shooting, hitting four more threes (11 in the last two games) to score 12.  Maggie McGuire dominated again with 10 points and an incredible 21 rebounds.  Abby Pesansky had a similar dominant performance with 10 points and 17 rebounds.  Anna Wiggins hit a free throw and gave the Cavs her usual rock-solid ball-handling and routine breaking of the Lady Rebels full-court press.  Anna’s importance to this team cannot be overstated.  Sarah Wilson again did what she always does, shutting down the opponent’s top offensive players and helping defensively everywhere on the court.  And let’s not overlook the defensive prowess of Katherine Friedman, who played a primary role in limiting leading scorer Melanie George to only two second-half points.  With this win, the Cavs earned a first-round bye in the Patriot District playoffs along with West Springfield.  Congratulations as well to our WTWGBB girls who were named to the All District Teams: Maggie McGuire First Team, Abby Pesansky Second Team, Sarah Wilson Second Team and All District Defensive Team and Anna Wiggins and Eunice Yoon, Honorable Mention.

The Cavs next face longtime rival South County at home on Tuesday in the Patriot District semifinals.  Let’s pack the stands and cheer on the best Woodson girls’ team in nearly 20 years!

The Cavs Boys Varsity Basketball team completed the regular season with a tough loss to Fairfax (36-57) and finished the Patriot District pay at 2-8.  Andre Pacheco scored 7 points with 5 rebounds leading the Cavs attack while Joe Pesansky added 8 points.  Ethan Lash played solid defense and also scored 6 points against a very tough Fairfax squad. On Friday, the Cavs played in their first round District Playoff game away against Robinson and lost (46-52).  Donovan Boyce had his best game of the year scoring 18 points with 3 rebounds as did Lash coming off the bench providing a much needed spark with 10 points.  Pesansky also finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds and Pacheco continued his strong defensive efforts and finished with 4 points, 4 boards, and 3 assists.  The Cavs also announced this week that Pesansky was chosen 2nd team all District, Moe Raff honorable mention, and Pacheco on the all District defense team.  The Cavs wait for their draw and will play in the Occoquan Regional Tourney the week of 2/25.

Woodson Rifle Scoring Rifle team - Senior Stephanie Ricigliano and Juniors - Meredith Ivey, Victoria Kopelen, and Nate Wehrlen faced the rest of the scoring teams in PHSRL Regional Championship on Saturday, February 15th.  Several other teammates were able to join them in the competition this weekend - many shooting personal bests in relays that were extremely competitive as athletes challenged their mental and physical game with relays that were twice as long as a traditional high school match.  Athletes at Regionals shot 3x20 relays.  Each position - prone, standing and kneeling went from the traditional 10 scoring shots per position to 20 shots.  Going into the match the top three teams were Woodson with an undefeated record, Robinson with one loss to Woodson, and Lake Braddock with two losses - Woodson and Robinson.  The last relay of the day found Robinson's scoring team going against Woodson's scoring team.  After the first position, prone, Woodson was up by two points scoring a 795 out of 800.  After standing Robinson took the lead by 10 points.  Woodson came on strong and scored more points than Robinson in kneeling, but not enough to close the gap and take the lead.  Woodson came in second in the region 8 points down from Robinson with a final score of Robinson - 2340, Woodson - 2332, Lake Braddock - 2312  Woodson Rifle Team had much to celebrate - coming in second with more shots 10.2 or greater than any other team in the competition and athletes shooting personal bests.  But the greatest celebration came when Team Captain, Stephanie Ricigliano took first in the overall competition.  She shot a 591 out of 600.  Of those shots 48 were 10.2 or greater.  This entire season Stephanie has been a leader on the team not just scoring significant points in matches and breaking the league record for combined score with her other scoring teammates, but supporting new teammates with instruction on the sport and encouragement in competition. Her entire team was euphoric to see the results of her hard work and dedication to the sport.  Way to go Stephanie!!! And way to go Woodson Rifle!
