Announcing WPHS New Football Head Coach!

Good evening WP Community!!

As many of you may know, for the past two weeks, we have been interviewing candidates for our vacant head football coach position.  After a very intensive three tiered process, I decided on the candidate that I believe aligns with our values about student athletes, represents strong character and integrity, is a scholar of the game and has a healthy winning attitude, has impeccable references both coaching and teaching, understands our diversity, and most importantly will place the over all wellbeing and development (on and off the field) of our children first.

With wisdom and laser focus to the details of each candidate, I have selected Mr. Albert Song as the next coach of WPHS Wolverine Football.  Coach Song brings 15 years of coaching experience with two years as a head coach. His teaching (English) and coaching experience includes working in a diverse array of environments, from the majority minority Seneca Valley in Maryland, to the affluent Winston Churchill High School also in Maryland, to the elite private college preparatory Harvard-Westlake Upper School in Los Angeles, and most recently at Fairfax High School, a Title I School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

His championship-level experience began with six years of coaching and mentorship at 12-time Maryland state champion, Seneca Valley High School, which has had a winning season every year in its program history except one.  He went on to become the head coach at Winston Churchill High School, where he successfully implemented a winning culture for character development of student athletes in the classroom and the community based on what he calls his five pillars – desire, devotion, discipline, determination and details. For the first time in six years, student athletes were held accountable for their academics, achieving an overall team GPA of 3.5.  Coach Song also partnered with a 27–member booster club board to fundraise over $100,000 in two years from multiple revenue sources solely for the benefit of the football program. His collaborative efforts brought about some of the largest annual increases in school history, bringing them out of a budget deficit.

I would like to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation for Coaches Carfang, Grafton, LaGow, Radoski, and Roach for staying committed to our students during this time into the transition over the next few few months and beyond. They will be working closely with Coach Song to make sure that our students will not miss a beat during this spring off season.

Coach Song will be traveling from California monthly and will be fully moved here in June living 10 minutes from West Potomac.  His first visit will be on Friday February 28th when he will meet with the team and coaches.  We will host a meet and greet for the community as well so stay tuned for more details for that event.

Thank you all for your continued support of our school community as we look forward to a new era in West Potomac Football. Join me in welcoming Coach Song----LET”S GO WEST PO!!
